Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

I kind of rememeber a thread a few month ago where a Les Paul guru was explaining the technical differences between each LesPaul.

You should do a little research. Basically I think it is a question of thickness of the maple top and weight of the beast.

I can't really help you to compare as in the Gibson range I only played the Studio, which BTW I really enjoy playing.

Oh! There is also the question of the neck profile... But let the gurus chime in...

this is my favorite LP:

i voted 'other' heh.

in all seriousness, i'm pretty sure the primary differences (pickups and neck thickness varies depending on the era y'know) are the finishes and binding. Studio has no binding...Standard has some binding...something like that. I'm really the last one you should ask about LPs.

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

Historics, other than that I like les pauls that are not made by Gibson! LOL!

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

i voted other, because i, too, love p90's. the 56 goldtop is the only les paul i like.

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

Studios usually have a 50's neck and no binding. Wood quality is slightly lesser than Stds. 498T/490R pickups.

Classics are reproductions of 60's LP's, and they usually feature the 60's neck, the wood quality is in between Studios and Standards, and the inlays are darker than the pearly white ones on Stds and Customs. They also feature vintage nickel style hardware, the headstock is slightly narrower, and the pickups are ceramic 500T open coils.

Standards are the most popular LP. They come with 50's fat or 60's thin profile, and have binding on neck and body. Rosewood fretboard. Standards are really my favorite LP's, whether they're production models or Historic models. Pickups are 498T/490R before 2002. Burstbuckers 2002+

Customs have pinstriped binding on the body, binding on neck AND headstock.
Ebony fretboard. Tonally, they're more blunt and powerful sounding, whereas Std's are sweeter and more resonant, typically. It has most to do with the weight of Customs and the Ebony neck.

Historics are typically well crafted reissues that use the very best woods available to Gibson, more hand finishing, and a lot more money. The main thing to keep in mind is they tend to come with fatter necks than the typical 50's/59 profile. Fatter necks create better tone, but can be too cumbersome to players that want a faster playing guitar. Just something to keep in mind, in case you're buying without trying.

The number one thing to consider when shopping for Les Pauls is neck profile.
Beyond that, you want light resonant wood, and a perfect setup. Les Pauls in the store are almost unplayable with the horrible setups they come with.
Once the nut is cut to the right height, and the intonation is spot-on, LP's will prove themselves to be the best sounding humbucking guitars in your arsenal.

Amen to that! :fing2:

I'm a R0 Gibson guy myself. I dig the 60's slim taper necks the most :)

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

I like them all :bigthumb:

But if I could only have one, it would be a Standard.

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

Historics all the way. if you like single coils, go with an R6 goldtop OR do like i did and find a late 90's Historic '54 Custom RI with the P90 bridge and Alnico 5 staple pole neck PU. Warning about the Historic Customs.....they are solid mahoghany (no maple top) and quite a bit heavier than the R9's, 8's and 7's. Mine is pretty heavy and the 3 PU "57 Black Beauty weighs a TON.....they both sound and play great, though.:fingersx: If cost is a problem, then just look at a bunch of Standards and grab the one that you like best.

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

Being a fan of Pete Townshend i grew up loving LP Deluxes.... and i still do..... I love the newer reissues over my 76! The mini Humbuckers just look cool and they sound great....

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

Custom. Gotta have that ebony fretboard to add a bit of snap back into a lester.. but then the basic design is damn close to prefect ;)

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

Ok I am not a huge LP fan, But I prefer Historics like many have said and yes Just like theodie, I prefer nongibson LPs. I voted for Others. But given a choice betwenn Gibson LP I would go for Standard

who's broken LP is this... shame to waste such an expensive guitar... and i'm a Who Fan!!!!

Re: Which gibson Lespaul you like?

I like the Classic, personally. I like the 60s neck and the Classic can be had for a really good price. If I had found a Standard with a 60s neck for a similar price I would have bought that, but the Classics were easier to hunt down.

I bought mine with Classic 57s in it, so I can't say too much about the stock pups, other than the bridge is a very hot, cermic pup. I liked it in the store, but I've spent a lot more time on mine with the 57s...
