Re: Which guitar companies supply pickups that are well-matched to the guitar?

Is 1980 era pressboard more tone full the pressboard of today? I mean are the Dan-Electros of yesteryear really Dan-Electros of modern?

I wish I had more experience with Gibson. That’s the one I see getting discussed the most around here, and it would be nice to be able to keep up. I seem more easily pleased by what they do than a lot of people here. My motto: “Gibson. It’s probably good enough. I guess.”

Still no votes for Squier. Granted, I usually think their pickups stink out loud, but I played a Strat once that had Duncan Designed single coils, and it sounded really good. I feel like I could have played that guitar a lot before wanting to change them.

I’ve always loved Gibson but the cost v product isn’t what it used to be. I rifled through a few 2018 Tribute models before I found the one I wanted. I will eventually replace all the parts. Sad to say but that’s what you get for grand now from Gibson.

My CVs came with Toneriders. Badass imho.

My Squier bass actually sounds really good, so I have no need to swap the pickups in it. I haven't played enough of their guitars to know one way or the other.

Re: Which guitar companies supply pickups that are well-matched to the guitar?

That poll is missing EBMM guitars which are usually known to include better stuff in stock form

G&L should have been up there in place of Squier lol

LTD not that much, ESP however is different story.

Suhr guitars also include good stuff in them but thats like custom shop quality overall.

"498T / 490R

they go in almost everything Gibson builds because they sound the same regardless of the guitar."
The set may not be matched, but that 498 aint so bad. I have heard many killer sounding guitars with that PUP. Same with 57s. Everybody likes to kick Gibson to the curb. I like my 57s myself. I wonder, do people want to see Gibson fold and see all those American workers lose their jobs? I dont.

I don't think anyone wants to see Gibson close. But there's such thing as customer feedback & constructive criticism, which Gibson needs to listen to more carefully. They've squandered large amounts of time and R&D on ridiculous guitars that players have no interest in, not unlike the Edsel (V2, Reverse V, Zoot Suit SG, etc) and don't seem to make their PU's a priority. A couple years ago they revamped their product line with overpriced guitars with robot tuners, that players avoided. They periodically rotate Classic '57's (dull high end, muddy tones), the 490 set (lackluster), & the 498T/490R set (bright thin bridge, warm neck; good luck getting an amp EQ that works well for both) thru their guitar lines without rhyme or reason. Their aftermarket PU prices are farcical, you can buy much better sounding PU's for less. I'd love to see Gibson put an emphasis on their PU's and be a serious contender for tone quality at realistic prices. They seem to have a "This is what you'll get and you'll like it" approach to consumers. The market's too competitive for that. It would be great to see them listen to players more, instead of dictating to them, so they can be the leader they should be and the name Gibson stand for consistently top quality. That's not going to happen unless people are candid. A company won't improve if people are afraid to point out places where they can do better, whether it's customers or employees. In fact, speaking up is how companies improve and stay in business. When no one says anything when a company is going off track, is how they wind up going out of business.

The point of the poll wasn’t to include the guitars with the best factory pickups. It was to focus on the brands with the most widespread retail presence and name recognition. But only ten of them, due to the limitations of the forum software.

Re: Which guitar companies supply pickups that are well-matched to the guitar?

^Bleh, flawed poll. :9:

Three of those make their own factory pickups: Gibson, Fender & PRS. And they add those to their own guitar models.
Squier contains Fender in its logo - wasted spot, prolly why no one voted for it. The ltd & ibanez use pickups designed for them or aftermarket ones.

Yamaha, now that is well known than EVH(not the band) & spread literally around the world. They make stuff in house as well.

Re: Which guitar companies supply pickups that are well-matched to the guitar?

Hamer and Heritage always did a great job, IMHO. Fender too..... although I tend to replace everything anyhow.

Maybe because they almost always used Duncans?

Re: Which guitar companies supply pickups that are well-matched to the guitar?

"Wood doesn't matter". That's not what she said.

Seriously, most of my experience is with Strats and Teles, and for my purposes the stock pickups are always well suited for the instruments. The fact that I must replace them as soon as possible with Duncans and occasionally other brands is not an indictment of the stock pups.

Many great points. But.... Read the reviews on their products. Are there better PUPs? Sure there are and thats keeping more American companies going. I was going to buy the Anaconda Slash LP, I think its STUNNING. Gone in one day. Did they make some very bad decisions with the product line in 15? Sure they did. But the continued hate is getting so bad it really is getting to the point of just hateful. Every utube vid, one even suggests that Gibson is selling broken headstocks!! Thats BS. I always been a individual thinker, I still am. Sick of the same ole same ole. Read the reviews on Sweet...... All 5 stars, some from newbs, some not from newbs. Still FIVE STARS. Get off the hate train
