I want a nice heavy tone, good at low volumes too. Needs lots of articulation, and a very tight tone. What do you guys think? I will be running through one of these amp with a mahogany schecter C-1FR(Original Floyd Rose) rosewood neck, with a Bill Lawrence L-500XL in the bridge and a Full Shred in the neck.

Re: Which high gain head?

Umm...what happened to the microcube being all that and a bag of chips? Lays originals you claimed....;)

Re: Which high gain head?

I love my Single Rectifier, can't say enough good things about it. Everything you described in your origional post just about sums it up. Beautiful, tight, heavy, thick tones (capable of bedroom volume!)! Just about a must buy - actually is a lot cheaper than the others you named off.

Re: Which high gain head?

Biu, Guitarist, thanks for the response, I have a triple recto model and dig it, I just wanted to check out different stuff.

Re: Which high gain head?

The ENGL SE is probably the best out of the ones you posted. You want a real high gain head?... look at a Soldano SLO or a Bogner Ecstasy. Those two will pretty much knock you on your behind. For the price, Mesa is probably the best deal, but it doesn't have the quality of ENGL or the above ^^^ VHT is pretty awesome too, just not a Soldano or Bogner IMHO.

Rivera nails basically Fender and Marshall in one head. Marshall isn't exactly high gain. They are great rock amps, but I wouldn't consider them something death metal bands would use ;)

Re: Which high gain head?

I have a rivera knucklehead, and while I REALLY like it, it is not a high-gain head. Out of your choices I chose the VHT because I've seen some Pitbulls with huge amounts of gain, and even more clarity. They carry huge price tags (not as much as a Bogner though!), but they're worth a try.

Re: Which high gain head?

A local shop near me carries ENGL and I really like their amps. They are SUPER high-gain, so get ready!

Re: Which high gain head?

Bogners are great but they're really not my thing; a little too compressed and not aggressive enough. None the less, I'd have to second Chris's recommendations of a Soldano SLO or Bogner Ecstacy. If the sound you're looking for doesn't live in one of those boxes, you don't need it.

Ironically Chris, most of the death metal bands I've seen (at least the older ones) were using Marshall JCM 800s.

I had a jcm 800, I would not necessarily consider it a high gain amp (I could not get a ton of gain out of it or anything, I was not satisfied with it). Once the mods are done, it must be able to get the zakk wydde sound though.

Re: Which high gain head?

Diezel is a good choice while we're on the subject. The new Herbert is supposedly 50% better sounding than the VH4... so open up your wallets :D

If you don't want to pay so much money for a Bogner Ecstasy, but still want just a killer distortion, the Bogner Uberschall does deliver ;)

Re: Which high gain head?

Hmm.. what about a Laney Tonny Iommi Sig ? Will cost way less than those mentionned...

Re: Which high gain head?

Since Bogners are getting some hot discussion, I figured I'd ask: anyone know anything about the Shiva? The mp3s on the site sound pretty good, but does anyone have any personal experience with it?
