Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

So I'm in the market for a Marshall-esq Dirt Box & I think I've pretty much narrowed it down to a couple choices but I'm a bit torn between them? My gut instinct says to go with the Wampler since I've been incredibly happy with every other Wampler pedal that I've owned thus far & I don't expect this to be an exception. Plus it seems to be a little more tweakable & I do already have some experience with the regular Pinnacle, which was fantastic!!! I'm guessing this will probably sound & behave just like that with the added bonus of a boost, you know because that's what it is???

LOL!!! On the other hand I can get the Dirty Little Secret for about $30 less & while I've never had the chance to try one myself I've heard great things about it & I'm quite impressed with the demos I've seen so far...

Just looking for some other opinions....

Tough call. I don't have hands on with either. I stopped looking for a MIAB pedal when I got my RambleFX Marvel Drive. I do have a Wampler ThirtySomething, as well as own AC30s, and based on that experience, I fully trust any Wampler simulation of any amp.

Isn’t the Pinnacle supposed to do a better Tedward by itself?

I haven’t played them both myself, but doesn’t the Wampler have quite a bit more gain than the DLS? That would definitely be a consideration for me.

HAven't played either. My vote is for DLS Mk 2

Re: Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

Never played the Wampler.

So I have to give another vote for the DLS.

Responds really good with guitar volume. The current model has a great little switch that lets me change between Super Lead or the Super Bass. Really like the SB mode as it gives a nice crunch without much compression.

Re: Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

Just in case you aren't aware, there are only three versions of the Pinnacle:

-"Standard": any Box with one footswitch is a standard. It has the Tone Knob/Contour Knob, a switch for Vintage/Modern and a switch for "Boost" (kind of a gain boost with a little change of tone as well)
-"Deluxe" version 1: Any two footswitch Pinnacle other than the latest version 2. Sometimes it's called Deluxe, sometimes Limited, it's the same as the standard above but the gain Boost is now footswitchable.
-New "Deluxe" V2: New pedal with full three band EQ, Vintage/Modern switch, again Boost Switch AND a footswitchable Boost that is basically a know additional Tube Screamer with a single control, as well as a "sag" switch that makes the response more immediate or like the original sag.

The new V2 is more versatile than the older ones, but that means you can get an older one for a steal now. Basically, I would either get an older Standard or a new v2 Deluxe.

The Pinnacle lives in the mid to high gain Marshall territory while still feeling like an amp. I far prefer it to some of the other so called "Marshall in a box" pedals that just use op amp with hard diode clipping and creative EQ.

I've not played a DLS, but it too is JFET based, and probably sounds and responds very amplike. Throw in the Plexidrive Deluxe and the Bogner pedals and you have a lot of great contenders. The best would be to shoot them all out with your guitar and amp.

Good luck!

Brian Wampler said he wanted the v2 Pinnacle to be more versatile than the original but I use the original for a lot of different tones. It's really an incredible pedal. It nails THAT tone but it also does the general Marshall thing incredibly, even straight into a cheap PA (not my rehearsal space of choice and the crappy solid-state amp they provided decided to drop a deuce).

That said, I haven't used the DLS. It could do all the same things.

i have a dls mkii and its a very cool pedal. at 18v it is fantastic miab pedal. havent spent much time with the mkiii but im sure it also kicks ass

Re: Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

I ended up going with the Pinnacle...

It's got a bit more gain on tap but also sounds pretty great at lower gain levels so I think it's going to be a bit more versatile which is something that's pretty appealing to me since I've been trying to take a more minimalistic approach to my pedals. It also bridges the divide between Overdrive & Distortion pretty well so I'll give it a shot & if it doesn't jive with my playing I'm pretty sure I could sell it for the cost of the D.L.S.?

Re: Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

I don't use much pedal dirt, but the three live demos I've heard of MIAB pedals into a Fender amp that impressed me were the Tech 21 British, Radial Tonebone Hot British and the Carl Martin Plexi-Tone. The Radial demo team had a model JCM 800 half-stack to compare with a Deluxe Reverb and the pedal, and the pedal and DR nailed the sound of the Marshall. I liked Pete Thorn's demo of the P-T, too.

Unfortunately all of these are pretty big on a pedal board.

Re: Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

both are great approximations of marshalls. however they are approximations of different marshalls and sound nothing alike.

Re: Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

What are you running this through--your old Fender, the Supro, something else?

I don't have any experience with either pedal--I've heard good things about the Wampler.

Best "Marshall In A Box" pedal I've ever used through a Fender tube amp was a Lovepedal Purple Plexi. Very nice overdrive to raunchy over the top gain.

Re: Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

I have a similar dilemma...
I've found a cheap dls mkii which i would put through my blackstar series one to get whats called the 'Marshall sounds'!
Is this a good/best pedal to go for with that amp? Has anyone had any experience with these together?
Thanks

Re: Which Is A Better "Marshall In A Box" Pedal??? Opinion Poll.....

At least half the MIAB pedals are modified versions of that. And the other 45% are BSIAB clones. The final 5% are Tube Screamers with a slightly modified tone stack to sound more "Marshally". :psi

What's BSIAB?
