Re: which les paul standard?

You buy the one that speaks to you. You buy the one that plays and sounds like it was made for you. Don't rush, just play as many as you can to find "the one."

Re: which les paul standard?

I am partial to honeybursts, tea and darkbursts.

The sunbursts can be nice but are often too red. I prefer that historics to the production LPs when it comes to red/yellow bursts.

Re: which les paul standard?

If you can swing it, I really recommend gettng a Historic Standard. I have two mid-90s Classics, a Supreme, and a '58 Historic--and the Historic is in a league of its own.

The Historic does have a much bigger neck, and I thought I would hate it, but I've managed to adapt. The tone of the Historic is so much more resonant and alive and organic. I get about 90% of that vibe with my Classics, though the Supreme is something else altogether.

I thought the Historic would end my GAS, but I really want another one! My advice--the Historics are the way to go!

Re: which les paul standard?

get the one that stays in tune and is stable..
the neck should not be overly gummy as to slow down your playing..

i cannot forget how many les pauls i went through to find my standard paul that stayed in tune perfectly..
custom, classic, studio, all had tuning issues..one bend and it'd be whacked..
not my standard

i personally like the 60s neck..
though you may like the fatter 50's

as for color, i have a desert burst which looks great and different from all angles..ebony and wine red look great too

just throwing out some pointers that you should be aware of when buy a paul..

Re: which les paul standard?

I played more than I care to remember trying to find one I liked, and the winner happened to be desert burst.

Re: which les paul standard?

I'm from the old school. A Standard has to have rosewood (Customes have Ebony) And I would go with a burst. It really don't matter which one.... they are all pretty! Some of them won't require a pickup change either, bit if you do feel that the pickups need improving on, I would recommend a set of AlnicoII pros. Very versatile and really warm tone!

Re: which les paul standard?

I agree with alot of what the guys are saying... colour should be secondary, how it FEELS is most important with a Paul. I tried SO many I was getting fed up 'coz lots looked great and lots felt wrong. I was NOT even bothered about sound, after all we're all here coz we know we can change the sound in a matter of minutes, right? I also agree that the historics are great, I have a '57 B.B and the neck is big, but the tone is warm and massive!! My other L.P is a '96 first issue Page, most would say great... and it is now it's got a Brobucker in it... but the '57 is just awesome. So, try as many as you can and you'll just know when you find one that suits you. Good luck.

Re: which les paul standard?

I tried once an Honeyburst that played like a dream... perfect feel, perfect sound, like in pork, everything was good.
Unfortunately I am not in the market for a new Paul... first I won't put this kind of money in a guitar, and I already have 2 Les Pauls which are quite nice, but probably no where near this one. I should stop, I am gonna cry otherwise :banghead: :chairshot :dot:

PS: 60's taper all the way. Having said that, I probably prefer the 59 profile of the Studio. But you can't get it on the Standard... Tough!

Re: which les paul standard?

Iced tea, or some type of Honeyburst.

Or if you're set on Ebony/Sunburst, definitely Ebony. They can be gorgeous.

Re: which les paul standard?

EveryMn, I've liked you and agreed with you very much up until now. But (besides a few Gretsches), Les Pauls are by a great margin the best guitars in the world. People who buy Strats listen to crappy music, or aren't willing to fork out $3K for a guitar, but even most of them will agree that LPs are the best guitars in the world. Perhaps they just realize they can't harness the awesomeness that is an LP.

LPs would be the perfect if they had the cleans of Strats (or single coils in general). That's why P90 or minibucker (Deluxe) LPs are my personal favorite.

I love SGs as much as most people, I really like them a lot. But LPs are far and away better!

Re: which les paul standard?

I haven't read what everyone else suggested, but for colour I'd go with:

A Fender Telecaster!!!:nana:

By virtue of you spelling "color" with a u, you are hereby disqualified from ever posting here again. You might have to give up your right to live, the jury's still out on that.

Re: which les paul standard?

I love all the burst based on the originals.
Lemon
Light
Honey
Iced Tea
Cherry
I also like the Trans Amber.

The only I don't like is the tobacco sunburst, did some of the originals actually darken to that color?

Hey complain to the British people that invaded this land 400 years ago and cultivated it. They left their language here, and "colour" is part of it. I guess I'm just used to using Canadian spelling as it looks more familiar to me and makes more sense (except centre, which is spelt that way to eliminate have to put center and centre on arenas, cause the bilingual laws).
