Which Les Paul would you buy and why?

Re: Which Les Paul would you buy and why?

I'm a sucker for the faded series myself. I love the look and the feel of the satin finish. Not every faded I've played has been a winner though so it's really hit or miss with those. I would get my butt over to try that guitar out and if it feels right, sounds good and speaks to you then I would get it if I were you.

Re: Which Les Paul would you buy and why?

This is a total no brainer...

Forget clambering vs. solid vs. weight-relieved. It doesn't really matter, and neither do the myriad of other construction details, or what year it was made.

Neck shape does matter. Everyone has a preference, but you can adapt to almost anything, over time. The same can be said for color. Each of these guitar finishes have advantages and disadvantages.

For me, a hard case is a must, especially so for ANY Gibson. Gig bags are just asking for a broken neck if you are taking the guitar out. But aftermarket cases are available and are not very expensive, so it's not a huge issue.

There are often vast differences in Les Pauls, even among the same models. So the ONLY thing that really matters is which guitar speaks to you. It's a cliche, I know, but buy the one that puts a smile on your face. And be prepared to walk away from both of them, if neither feels "right". Internet opinions don't mean jack...you've got to make the best decision for YOU. And you are the only one who can decide that. Don't be afraid to play a lot of guitars.

Good luck.

I'd take the black Studio for shure as the chambered versions just felt weird and cheap to me. Also agree with Bill here, a hardcase for a Gibson is a must.
For me personally neck profiles aren't that much of an issue. As long as there or no frets protruding along the edge, the fretwork is in good order and the truss rod can get me the preferred relief it's all good to me playing wise.

Re: Which Les Paul would you buy and why?

I find the argument for the hardshell case Gibson makes to be humorous at best. That is hardly a protective case and I certainly do not trust them for gigging and especially for flying. They are flimsy and not very sturdy. Do they look cool? Of course and I can see how cork sniffers love showing off that Gibson stamp on the case but really that is more or less a giant sign to a thief saying "steal this one".

Screw that. Don't ever buy a guitar because it comes in a flimsy case just because the case says Gibson on it. When I used to own Gibsons I never trusted those cases and opted for a SKB to protect my investment instead. These days they make the SKB 56 which is one of the best cases available for flying as it has a TSA approved lock.

Buy the guitar that speaks to you and buy a good case for a guitar you care about. Those Gibson cases are hardly even good enough for an Epiphone.

Gibson Les Paul Studio Standard or Studio Custom. Not a fan of the trapezoid or block inlays, but love dot inlays.

Re: Which Les Paul would you buy and why?

So plans changed a bit. I appreciate all the advice given, but due to spending quite a bit more on school stuff for my 2 kids than I had planned, the Les Paul purchase is being put on hold.

So instead I grabbed this Samick Artist Series. I tell you what, this damn thing plays and sounds pretty effing nice. $150, and it came with the coffin case. Will probably put a WLH set in it someday, but for now the stock pups are doing the job.

I also got this 15" Big Ben pretty cheap to go into my Carvin bass cab. Running it out of my Mesa 5:25, along with its internal speaker......what a difference!

Re: Which Les Paul would you buy and why?

Damn, that's a good price, as those Coffin Cases are expensive. You could probably sell it for enough money to get a respectable case, and have money left over.

I totally agree about the extension cab on the 5:25. It makes it a much better amp.
