Which Lunch box?

Hello I'm looking to purchase a lunch box amp. I have tried the Vox Night Train and the Orange Tiny Terror TT15. The Vox didn't doing anything for me but the TT15 sounded great dirty! The only thing I didn't like it had only a tone knob instead of BMT adjustments. I have heard good things about the Egnater Tweaker 15W. The one amp I really want is Mesa Boogie Transalantic but is about $900 dollars. I am not sure it worth extra $300- 500 extra. Any suggestions on these or other small tube amp heads or combos would greatly appreciated.

If you need a full EQ you are a girl.

In my opinion, the Mesa is worth the extra money. Instead of being a "lunchbox amp", it is a fully decked out rocking amp with so much tweaking power. Then again, when you get to that range, the Express 5:25 is not far away.

If not, my second choice (close one to) is the dual terror. Won't do clean anywhere as good as the Mesa, but it's a hell of an amp, with two channels to boot.

Wildcard vote goes to the Traynor Darkhorse. Try one, you might surprise yourself.

You and your Mesas! I was thinking about the Traynor Darkhorse too. That's one badass amp.

Re: Which Lunch box?

Lionheart 20 watts combo
Or the top and two 12's...
If you want even smaller then there is the 5 watter combo as well.
Or if you have the money...
Fender Super-Sonic 22.......that is one great amp!

For $299, there's also the Jet City Picovalve.

I'm still leaning toward the the Egnater Tweaker. Also, if you wait, the Egnater Tweaker series is being expanded next year to include two higher wattage 2 channel Tweakers.....6L6 and KT-88. $600 and $800....if I recall correctly. I saw them at the LA Amp Show, but neither could be considered lunchbox amps.

Re: Which Lunch box?

Dual Terror is awesome! If you liked the Tiny Terror then you'll be really impressed with the Dual.

Re: Which Lunch box?

hard to deny the Tweaker hoopla, and Egnater has been a name I've associated with greatness since '93 when the guy's preamps were holding their own next to The Fish. But I've not tried any Tweakers.

but to give you 2 more options there OP, I've been having some fun with these 2 amps. They have survived all my recent trading endeavors, and though my old #1 amp is gone I still own these, and would buy them again. For the prices new, it would be folly to part with them. I really like them:

  1. Kustom Defender 5h. 5 watt EL84. One input tube, and one knob to saturate the one output tube. That's it. "Glass breaking" EL84 top end character in a class A design that couldn't be any simpler. How could it be?
  2. Ibanez Tube Screamer Amp. 15 watt 6V6. Has a boost and a built-in tube screamer circuit, but it's really about the big Fendery clean sound for me.

The Dual Terror is my choice. I love overdrive of TT it was one sweetest sound I have heard, but the Dual has second channel (Lead) oh my heavens :14:.

Now I'm looking to get a empty 2 x 12 cab and maybe put one G12M-25 and a G12H 30W what do think of this speaker choice?

When I was a kid, I had a Rat Pack lunchbox.

You can run these in the current Tweaker now as well.
