Which Marshall Cab For Jcm 2000 Dsl100 Head?

JCM 800 slant loaded with G12-65's

1960AV (Vintage 30's)

I'm stuck on which way to go and am unable to test either.

As info, the other guitarist in the band plays a JCM800 2210 through a 1960B cab. I want to make sure we each have our own thing going on. He plays a stock 1992 Gibson LPC and I play a 1993 American Strat with Seymour Duncan Hotrails. My tone is Angus Young meets Johnny Ramone. He's a bit more Slash. We both only play through our bridge pickup and are "set it and forget it" players.

I play mine through a JCM 900 cab and a MX212 with no issues. Both cabs have Celestions, G12T75s in the 900 and Seventy 80s in the 2x12. I love the tone of both cabs. I also play the head through a 1x15 Celetion Fullback sometinmes and that really gives me some chug. I dont feel there are any "bad" Marshall cabs out there, including the ones made in China. It is all about the tone you are going for. Just because a cab has a bigger price tag it doesn't mean it is going to have the tone you are looking for. If you were you I would put my head and LP in the car one afternoon and drive around to some music stores checking out different options.

I would get the 65 loaded cab if it was me. If the other guitarist's cab is loaded with G12T75s the V30s will contrast more against his sound than the 65s though. 65s and 75s are similar, but the 65s have fuller mids and warmer highs than the 75s. If your playing mostly with distortion, V30s work great for that. The 65s will be nicer for cleans and lighter overdrive.

I don't run super high gain, like crazy metal or anything. Angus Young meets Johnny Ramone is the best description I've ever been able to come up with for my tone...and it's that tone all the time. We're a heavily Ramones influenced band...in fact, our other guitarist and our drummer do double duty in CJ Ramone's band.

I have the MX212a as the cab for my DSL15H. I use it solely for home use. I'm not interested in MDF construction cabs for going in and and out of band practice and shows. That cab sounds great with my DSL15H, though.

My choice for a DSL 100 would be a 1960A slant loaded with V30s. I'm a Mesa user, but used a provided DSL 50 with that cab for an outdoor festival a few years ago and was very pleased with the tones. Glad to see it was one of the choices.

Good luck!

I'd go 1960av. I think you'll end up with an overall thicker sound playing together. As a stand-alone speaker I prefer the jcm800 cab w/65s.

Re: Which Marshall Cab For Jcm 2000 Dsl100 Head?

A popular thing to do if you buy a 1960A is to add two V30's to the stock 75's in a V30 top or criss cross pattern. The two compliment each other, and you can choose which one to mic.

The venerable Bogner Uber Kab comes with a criss crossed V30/75T combo, and it's a great sounding cab. I've got a Marshall 412 set up like that, as well as other 412's with H30/V30, all V30, all 75T, and Creamback 65/H30. All those speakers are worth owning.

Re: Which Marshall Cab For Jcm 2000 Dsl100 Head?

I've got the 1960B 4 x 12 which came with a JCM2000 head I bought, I recently switched out the 2 G12-75T's for 2 V30's and it made it a lot brighter with more cut. I like it so much I may just swap the other 2 out and go 4 V30's. However I have access to an Orange PPC412 cab and that has 4 x V30's and sounds great with my 6505+ head. Try the x combination pattern thing mentioned above, you might like it.

I would get the V30s for Ramones. Also, like someone else mentioned, you can use a cross pattern with v30s and 75s and it will also sound good.

I actually put a Red Fang in my 4X12, so I can mic it, and I run my Vox15 into one side of the 4X12, which I can run in stereo. Sounds great.

+1 for a criss-cross pattern of V30's and G12-T75's. They really do sound great together.

Re: Which Marshall Cab For Jcm 2000 Dsl100 Head?

So...I ended up with 2 JCM800 cabs (just $200 each). One cab is loaded with a quad of G12M-70's and the other with a quad of G12 Vintage (Marshall branded V30's). All speakers in both cabs are 16 ohms and 70 watts).

Anyone ever mixed V30's with M-70's? Is it worth my time to try this?

Have you decided which cab sounds best to you? If you don't mix speakers in the cabs, just leave them as is, and only use your least favorite when you want two cabs.

M70's don't have as good of a reputation as V30's, so I'm leaning toward using your V30 cab the way it is.

Most of all, make sure your DSL100 is biased right with fresh tubes. So many used ones could use a tuneup. The bias drifted all over on the ones I've checked out.

Re: Which Marshall Cab For Jcm 2000 Dsl100 Head?

The biasing is great on the head and I'm having no drift problems at all.

+1 for The 1960AV with Vintage-30's!!! IMHO they are by far the best speakers for any of the DSL line, newer or older, 5W-100W. As for the bias & drift issues its been my experience that the older JCM 2000's have been a little more reliable in that department. That said, if your amp says DSL on it anyplace, no matter the wattage, year, or model, then it should definitely be checked out before it gets any real use. Luckily they are reasonably easy to tackle as long as you have some basic valve amp know how & a pair of rubber gloves....

The new DSL's come out of the factory with the bias set all over the place! My DSL40C had both trim pots completely pinned when I first bought & checked it! Afterwards my buddy who had just picked up a new DSL 100 head asked me to check his & do the C19 "Bright Mod" at the same time. In his case they weren't pinned but both tube were reading well over what they should have been & not matched with each other...

In both cases they were functioning perfectly after I spent a little time under the hood & although it's not "THE BEST MARSHALL EVER", my DSL40C has quickly become one of my favorites!!!

Re: Which Marshall Cab For Jcm 2000 Dsl100 Head?

I bought a JCM2000 DSL50 back in 2010 which came with a 1960B 4x12. Since then I've sold the head but kept the cab. I liked it with the JCM2000 at the time but couldn't help feel the stock G12T-75's were too boomy and muddy. So I switched out two of them for some V30's. First gig I played with them in I noticed a brighter tone and more cut in the mix. Very nice sound and I feel the other remaining two G12T-75's compliment them well. I have them in an X-formation in the cab with them being top right and bottom left.

As mentioned above if you don't want to mix them I'd go with the V30's cab.
