Which Marshall is...

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
The most Marshall sounding for the least cost. Think optimal tone/price performer, in a smallish combo. Does not have to be tube. Valvestate, MG, whatever...

Re: Which Marshall is...

I had a 20 watt DSL 201. All tube great sound. Can be bought on ebay for around 350. I wanted an 800 so I had to sell it. I wish I had it still. I was a poor college student then and had to sell one to get the other. Now I am a poor history teacher but have wasted enough to have kept both.

Re: Which Marshall is...

studio 15...

5xxx series (1980s SS amps)

old Valvestate...8xxx series

Re: Which Marshall is...

JCM800 Used

if you can't get that, the second generation valvestates are good and very cheap

Re: Which Marshall is...

i think the old valvestates are ok, cant think of anything else with a low price and sounds good for a small combo marshall

Re: Which Marshall is...

I have a 4203 Artist combo which has great Marshall balls. It's tube power and solid pre @ 30 watts.

Re: Which Marshall is...

The MkIII amps are killer. The combos I don't see come up for sale very often but when they do, they're priced pretty good, more than the heads but not much more. Look for a MkIII 2501 or 2502 combo.

Re: Which Marshall is...

NO LOVE FOR THE "BUDGET" JTM-series ?

I heard some very positive comments from JTM612, and a JTM622 owner !
They both love their Marshalls and say they will NEVER sell 'em, budget-amps, or not !!!

The JTM series have reliability problems. Marshall shrunk them down into a tiny little chassis and the heat just fries their poor little insides.

I highly recommend the JCM800 4010 - it's just a simple 2204 single channel 50-watt head in a 1x12 combo. Carry it to practice or wherever. For big gigs, unplug its speaker and substitute a 4x12 cab.

It's my #1 "never shoulda sold it" amp.:smack:

I have one and love it. But it is loud.
