Dunno about the comparision to other amps but I Gig with the DSL50 and absolutley love it!!

You can definitly get a modern as they come tone from it, aswell as old as they come!! Very versatile amp indeed!

Could'nt agree with you more. Once you get a good understanding of them the DSL 50 is a GREAT amp. I love mine! :fingersx:

Re: Which Marshalls for a more modern tone with some mojo?

I'm not much for the TSL's

I head modding DSLs and TSLs a la Voodoo is the way to go

I JUST TRIED the 18w Handwired 2061 - talk about MINI PLEXI

Re: Which Marshalls for a more modern tone with some mojo?

It's odd you say that...The 18 watters sound very little like a Plexi to me...the 18 watters are much more compressed and buzzy sounding, in fact I tink they sound terrible but maybe Im crazy.

As for the DSL/TSLm the TSL is a tewrrible amp as well IMO however the DSL is alright and can be modded into a bast by Trace at Voodoo...

Re: Which Marshalls for a more modern tone with some mojo?

I've heard some outstanding 18 watters. If they aren't plexi's they sure do impress me regardless of what they are. The EL84's seem to drive in a way that sounds like someone crammed half an extra 12AX7 in there somehow. Just a little more sizzle from the pre tubes and I really like them. I've been debating on building myself one to mess with. Get another BBQ head box in cherry just like the one I have and make it so that the amp heads will be interchangeable with my new smoking cab. Make one with a nice tremelo built into it and a smoking hot channel 2. NO reverb and NO master volume.

Re: Which Marshalls for a more modern tone with some mojo?

OK OK it's not a PLEXI but close
I mean I have played Aiken's and they nailed the mini-plexi thing
The Marshall ahd the mojo

has Marshall just has a nasty tone that says rock n roll and a lot of straight vodka to me.

For modern, JCM800 (since they're still popular) or DSL50.

One that I'm gonna cheaply plug even though you crinkle your nose at them...lol (but I don't care), JCM900 MkIII Master Volume (NOT the Dual Reverbs). These are the predecessor to the SL-X, with one less gain stage than the SL-X and one less preamp tube. Very diverse, goes from clean to scream easily. There's been a few 50 watt heads on eBay but not many. They're getting harder to find.
+1 on the JCM900, most people don't like them because of the 5881 tubes that most have in them. But early ones like the SL-X I have, use el-34 tubes. This basically gives those amps the tone of JCM800 with more distortion. Its not a JCM800 100% in tone, but it sounds like one that is hot rodded for more gain. The added gain does all modern tones for me included modern heavy metal, but with the gain backed down I can still do the lower marshall tones easily.

Whys it gotta be a Marshall?

Yeah good point. I've always liked the Mesa Dual Rectifier. That's the next amp that I'd like to get. I got the Marshall first though cause it was my dream stack.

The TSL is not a terrible amp, just different from the Marshall norm. You've got to play with them a bit more to find the sounds. I get some great tones from mine. It makes me chuckle sometimes, that people are trying to find their own tone, but use the same gear that everybody else uses. Try something different, you might be surprised.

Re: Which Marshalls for a more modern tone with some mojo?

I have never found the TSL thrilling

I have even been thrilled in bands that had DSLs

Dual Recs? hmmm they can be good, BUT for the NEW price I might look elsewhere.

NO ONE HAS SAID THE SILVER JUBILEE, NOT ONCE??? I AM SHOCKED? TOO VINTAGE FOR YA? I was waiting for someone to comment on it and recommend it along with putting something thru it's loop

Well the title of thread said; "..modern tone..". To me the Jubilee's just don't sound that modern. They have modern versatility in that you can go from a good clean to a great distortion, and you can operate them at less than insane volume levels. However to me, their voicing is way more vintage than modern.

I Don't usually operate any kind of FX in the loop. The loop on the Jubilees can be troublesome when used regularly. It can be the culprit of some strange behaviours such as unexpained volume drops.

Re: Which Marshalls for a more modern tone with some mojo?

My vote is an MV JMP or JCM800. any of those with vertical inputs. Tonal Bliss...

I just got a JMP-1 and I'm liking the tone. Not as Gainy as I figured it could be. I'm working on adding pedals...

Worth looking into.

As far as heads go -

New Dual Rectos, last time I checked, were $1699.00 USD

A New 1959SLPX at MF is $2099.00

A New JCM 800 2203X at MF is $1999.00

A new 2061X 20W at MF is $1849.00

A new JTM45 at MF is $1679.00

A new TSL 100 at MF is $1499.00

A new JMP-1 at MF is $1399.00

A new DSL 100 is $1299.00

A new Mesa Mark IV, last I read, is $1849.00

A new Stiletto Ace Head (50 watts) is $1499.00

Hope this helps. For 'modern' a Meas Mark IV is cheaper than a JCM 800 New. And IMO, Mesa amps are not as high priced as people think.

But if you're set on a Marshall, I did like the TSL I owned at bedroom levels, but it didn't really come alive at louder levels. On the other hand, my mesa can sound lack luster at bedroom levels, but Rocks hard at gig levels. And I really like the 800s but wouldn't call them modern.

Get an old GOOD marshall head and set up an older marshall rock sound that you like then use a guitar with more modern pickups in it to voice it slightly into modern territory.

Re: Which Marshalls for a more modern tone with some mojo?

JCM800 is good, but not that good. For the money, I'd go straight to Splawn and get a QuickRod or something.

Re: Which Marshalls for a more modern tone with some mojo?

Does the QuickRod NAIL the Marshall tone?

I thought Mesa Dual Recs were 1800 - 2000 new plus tax
hmmmmmmmmmmm

I might have been off base on that one then.

Go check out Splawns website and listen to the sound clips for yourself. I've never played one, but every sound clip I've heard from people that own them sound killer. It seems to do JCM800 and beyond. A stock JCM800 is not good for much, IMO...you either need to mod it or stick a pedal in front of it to get any more gain out of it than AC/DC type tones.

If I were in the market for a new Marshall, I'd be all over a Splawn amp.
