Which matched set for my V?

I'm thinking of replacing the stock Gibson pickups of my Flying V with one of the following matching sets:

-Vintage Blues Set (59/59)
-Hot Rodded Humbucker Set (Jazz/JB)

I play mostly blues and ballsy blues-rock. Heaviest stuff I play would be some Dio/Whitesnake covers, so there's no need for excessive downtuning and rubber mask wearing. Would the blues set have enough output for old school heavy music? Would the hod rodded set be too much for blues or would it be more clearer/too shrill sounding for my V? What do you guys think?:eek13:

Welcome to the board. :D In my V. I like to be able to go from a Schenker to a Albert King tone. I find the C5 SH-14 works well for both in the bridge. I don't like the JB for blues. The 59' will work well for both as well, but the C5 has some more bite. As for the neck, You can't go wrong with a 59'Neck. The Pearly Gates and APH-1 are great Neck PuPs as well.

Thank you, I'm glad to be here. :bigthumb:

Can you describe what you don't like in the JB? I've been listening to the samples and I think it might be a bit too compressed to my tastes. I think I'm going to limit myself to one of these two sets since they are quite a lot cheaper than buyng 2 pickups separately.

I'd definitely go for a '59 instead of a JB. It has a great open sound and I think that it has great crunch for more distortion too. Keep in mind that it is pretty bright for a humbucker... but it shouldn't be a problem with a mahogany V.

I find the JB to have a upper mid spike that I Feel is real annoying. The Jb sounds good w/t gain and is great for pinched harmonics. It also cuts though in a loud band situation, But other than that I don't find it to be very versatile IMO.

Re: Which matched set for my V?

I stumbled upon VHoholic's 59 clips at the Tips and Clips forum, and after hearing them I'm pretty sure that the 59/59 set is what I'm going to get. Thanks to everyone for the help and if you have anything you'd like to add to the topic, please feel free to share it.

Re: Which matched set for my V?

59/59, definately. Very, very versitile. The JB is only really good for performance unless you love having your ears cut. I love mids.. but mine are only at about 4 (really mid heavy pups)

Re: Which matched set for my V?

'59's should be all you need. As Timmy said, they are very versatile. They'll do Blues and beyond -- just turn up the gain if you want the beyond :)

Re: Which matched set for my V?

For all around all aroundness - 59 pair is hard to beat. Maybe Pearly gates for a little (I stress "little") more oomph and cut. Rev Billy G likes e'm for blues and the cut would be nice on crunchy metal. But....if you are willing to push the boundariesa a little....may I suggest:

A Hot P-90 neck and a Custom P-90 bridge. Or even two hot P-90's. I saw a V done up like that on the Gibson forum the other day - it was wicked cool!!!!! The routes under the pick guard are big enough, you just need a custom pick guard. MAybe 20 more buck. P-90 goodness is tough to beat for the blues....and the hot/custom will rock out just fine from what I understand.

Definetly the '59s, great pickups for blues, classic rock, and anything else!

No need to pawn the family jewels. Saw Epi V's for 399 at a big box music store. Plus a couple duncs and a Pickguard- Could be had for under 6 bills. Maybe less depending on the condition of a used V. Older would look cooler in this case, so a basher would be a bonus!
