Re: Which modern LP Type?

Ive managed to pop into a shop today and plated the SE245. Yhe body on that thing is Thick!! I also played the 2024 Gibson LPJ which to be honest for the same money as the PRS wiped
it off the planet in pretty much every way.

Mine. Solid Honduran with a single P90 that will rock Miss Queen into the gulf.

Re: Which modern LP Type?

I voted Chapman; I had a Michael Kelly and was extremely disappointed with it, and PRS is becoming nothing special really quickly, especially their imports. That Chapman, in profile, looks pretty faithful to the LP, but the ergonomics are much better. And I like the through-body stringing much better than tailpieces, even though it's not "vintage-correct".

Re: Which modern LP Type?

Michael kelly guitars are awesome! I have a patriot Custom that I love! I havent played a Chapman, but hear good things. Im guessing the thing that keeps the kellys from being more popular is that they are kind of blinged up with inlays and stuff. (turns some off) plus they are reasonably priced and a lesser known name. This shys the elitist guys away. I love all my guitars and would have a terrible time if I had to pick one, but Ive often thought that if I had to, and based on my ability, Id prolly keep the MK. Thats a pretty strong statement. It plays great, sounds great and for the price, came with grover keys, tone pros bridge/tail, push pull pots and when I opened the cavity, all the wiring was nicely bundled together in a zip tie. Id never seen that done. Nice attention to detail if you ask me.

The MK was a little too "bling-y" for my tastes. I voted for the Chapman as well. They come ready to play out of the box. If you get a 245 (or Bernie, like myself) there's the issue with the plastic nut, tuners, and possibly pickups needing to be replaced. The Chapman already has Grovers, a graphite nut, and the pickups are more articulate than the ones that come stock in the PRS imports. Having said that, the 245's and Bernies are great guitars after a little tweaking.

Re: Which modern LP Type?

I'm in the same boat. I would be all over the LTD if it didn't have Xtra Jumbo frets. I like that the Epi Tribute has a Maple cap not just a veneer.

Re: Which modern LP Type?

Ltd 256 is a great option, also the PRS 245. Schecter Solo 6 is quite underated too.
I'd avoid Epiphone. Playability can be nice, but the electronics and pots are sh!t.

Those Jap ESPs are great but they're really expensive. Another one you could consider is the Champan ML-2 Classic. Comes with SD '59s and a Peter Green mod, if you can look past the non-traditional appointments such as the Jumbo frets, maple neck and Ebony fingerboard, as well as the 25" scale length its probably one of the best modern LP-types, especially since all the upgrading has been done already. And its quite a looker too:

Oh yes and its limited edition. I think only 60 have been made

Oh yes I almost completely forgot about the Schecter Solo-6 Custom. Very cool and it comes stock with SD pickups, looks pretty nice too:

Re: Which modern LP Type?

with the chapman you will get an amazing build quality aswell as the prs (if you pay enough) i would recommend an esp ltd ec 401 but with a pickup swap (im a passive kinda guy)

EC-401 with a set of Black Dogs, or Whole Lotta . . . and ROCK ON !

Some EC-401's have passive pickups and have less, well, black finishes. The 2014 models have double-cream dimarzios. I've posted about this before. But I suppose either the EC-401 or Chapman are your best bet for value.

Re: Which modern LP Type?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest something that's not a fancy piece of crap.

Save up and buy a Gibson Les Paul Standard. Even the LPJ and Studio models are better guitars in wood and hardware than cheap imports. People will argue this all day long, and in some cases may be right, but overall.....take a Gibson set up perfectly with nice pickups, and compare it directly to a budget LP copy. You'll pick the better of the two, and chances are it'll say Gibson on it.
