Re: which monitor for recording? 2.1 system?
I think you're making the right choice. If you're not super serio0us about perfect mixes, goinbg to far with it will be a waste of money.
And note that adding bass traps will most likely reduce the bass you actually hear, giving you a more representative level of bass. All of my townhouse mixes were too low on bass because I had no bass traps and over compensated by reducing bass, thinking I had too much, when really it was just doubling/tripling up within the room (over simplying big time here).
Since it sounds like mixing bass within the room is a higher priority than total mixing, it would not be too expensive to build 4 2x4 moveable panels each built with 3 2 inch thick owens 302 (I think that's the usual rating) layered together for 6 inches deep, positioned to straddle each corner. That alone will make at least a modest difference in just about any room. Will take up some space, but better than nothing. Around $350 bucks for diy for panels, fabric (cheap walmart breathable - speaker cloth not needed and too pricey, wood, and fire retardant spray (most cheap material is not fire retardant). If that's too much dough or takes up too much space, even 4 panels 4 inches deep will help.
