which monitor for recording? 2.1 system?

Re: which monitor for recording? 2.1 system?

I think you're making the right choice. If you're not super serio0us about perfect mixes, goinbg to far with it will be a waste of money.

And note that adding bass traps will most likely reduce the bass you actually hear, giving you a more representative level of bass. All of my townhouse mixes were too low on bass because I had no bass traps and over compensated by reducing bass, thinking I had too much, when really it was just doubling/tripling up within the room (over simplying big time here).

Since it sounds like mixing bass within the room is a higher priority than total mixing, it would not be too expensive to build 4 2x4 moveable panels each built with 3 2 inch thick owens 302 (I think that's the usual rating) layered together for 6 inches deep, positioned to straddle each corner. That alone will make at least a modest difference in just about any room. Will take up some space, but better than nothing. Around $350 bucks for diy for panels, fabric (cheap walmart breathable - speaker cloth not needed and too pricey, wood, and fire retardant spray (most cheap material is not fire retardant). If that's too much dough or takes up too much space, even 4 panels 4 inches deep will help.

Re: which monitor for recording? 2.1 system?

thanks man, you are right, I am not serious about mixing, my priorities have consistently been different in my life, just bought a ton of guitar/bass gear tho

I just wanna hear bass for practicing, maybe later I will get my mixing setup. I still do unorthodox cheesy stuff like putting lame plugins on the master to boost up the limiter/compressor like auto-compressor and I never read the manual lolerz

I just need to hear bass so I can practice to youtube songs really. that is my priority in retrospect, now that I learned that getting better mixing gear is a no-go fruitless effort. thanks for your clarifying all, gvis many thanks for your help :)

Re: which monitor for recording? 2.1 system?

I forgot the website where I got them, but I bought 10 fiberglass panels and upholstered them with thick fabric (so i don't get the itchies....) a while back and they work amazingly well.

If you need to hear basslines better use an EQ. I have a 'home base' setup for my laptop which is a small mackie VLZ mixer I bought used for very cheap and a pair of audix 5 inch monitors on a desk, and they absolutely BLAST bass when I turn up the EQ on the channel strip for my laptop's audio output on the board. When I need to hear the notes for basslines, raising the mids control on the mixer makes it much clearer as well.

IMO, get yourself a small mixer if you don't have one. It will make routing easier, at any given moment I can hook up my ipod to my monitors, my guitar, a bass, the output of my amp, etc on the fly and and EQ any of them to make it suitable for listening.

Re: which monitor for recording? 2.1 system?

cool, thanks much Quencho092 for taking the time to help me out, that seems like a great way to go since subwoofer is not needed for mixing really and neighbors hate subs

cheers :beerchug:

edit: I use my computer eq for my 3" speakers but cant hear the bass much at all in most youtube recordings, it seems I need 5" or 6" to hear/eq

I listen to heavy rock downtuned music black sabbath down AIC downtuned to c#

Are you sure it's because of the small woofers? I had 2,75'' woofers in my first monitors and they noticed even the slightest notches in eq. And they were USB monitors. I think there might be something else going on.

I just bought my dad two 3'' monitors for TV/computer and there's lots of low end for sure, even in the Utoob videos.

KRK speakers sound great, I also like those old Yamaha near field systems with the white speakers. What I'm using now are a set of Alesis Monitor One speakers. For a small system, there's a lot of bottom end available and they can get ungodly loud if I need it.

Those Alesis Monitor Ones are beasts in it's price class (and even more I think)!

thanks for your insights, my m-audio studiopro3 have bass boost switch and my computer eq has 100 200 400 600 1k 3k 6k HZ adjustments, I just cant hear all the notes like I can on a 2.1

I was thinking about trying to add a cheap bass sub for $100 from best buy, I just dont know how to hook the speakers up since there is no sub-out for my speakers. the GC rep said they have the wiring for their $400 sub, so that may be better for me as it is more accurate but its out of my price range, maybe they will just sell me the wiring and advise me on how to hook up a $100 sub :)

sounds really cool man, I think it would handle c#

better monitors might make my untreated room mixes better, if I can hear the bass for practicing bass cover songs then I am golden, cheers

Re: which monitor for recording? 2.1 system?

I have a pair of these, they have a bass port in the back and get good low end - $200.00 for the pair is what I paid.

those are killer man! that is what I need, I like the idea of a nice sub to turn down/off like you said earlier,

heh nothing exceeds like excess, I may just do that, I might save up and find a way to attach a bestbuy $100 sub to band aide solution my issue, I have my eye on axetrak so I can record my thunderverb50 lol but I do want 5" nice monitors too ;)

Re: which monitor for recording? 2.1 system?

thanks man for the suggestion, that is what I need! I got the 6 inch KRK Rokit powered 6 speakers. they are killer! Got a great Christmas deal through Sam Ash on everything. I need tons of air. They pair up nicely with my Rokit 10s subwoofer. Now I get an incredible sound for listening and mixing and bass practicing. for practicing bass I can just adjust the crossover and turn up the subwoofer to boost low frequencies.

I bought the cords for an equalizer in case I want to adjust things more, my computer has a 10 band equalizer but I do want to adjust volumes on the fly and the 15 band or more would be nice.

Super happy with the sound, it is very full and rich, I'll post a better review once I mix a new song on this system. Thanks all, happy holidays:friday:
