Which neck pick up to pair with an Alternative 8 bridge?

i recently bought a custom made flyin' v which has an Alternative 8 bridge. the previous owner took out the neck pick up.

the guitar has an ash body, neck, and ebony fretboard. two volume pot (both push/pull), a tone pot, 3 way switch, string through body.

which neck pick up do you pair an Alternative 8 bridge? i might use the guitar mainly for covering metallica and megadeth songs using the bridge pick up but i would really like a warm tone coming from the neck.

The JazzN is bright and clear though. If the OP wants warmth and he's playing metal, a Screamin' Demon or Full Shred in the neck might be the way to go.

i used to have a mini screamin' demon for my strat, i do remember liking it, but it was in the bridge position. i have no experience with a jazz neck and full shred neck.

would a screamin' demon in the neck be muddy when used with high gain distortion?

Not overly, but you need to decide if you want bright and clear, or warmth. The reason a lot of players use a JazzN is it holds up great under a lot of distortion, hence Darth's recommendation.

The Demon works great in the neck, is very clear and articulate. Works great clean or pushed.

Good pickup to pair with an alt-8? Jazz neck.

Depends. Type of ash. Type of amp. Players technique.

It's not a warm PU. It's one of the brightest and clearest neck HB's Duncan makes. Many guys look at that as a virtue.

that "Duncan makes". no denying that. but for covering Metallica and Megadeth, I've not found it bright and clear. there are brighter and clearer humbuckers out there which leaves the Jazz to be on the bright and clear end of the SD spectrum.

a Full Shred neck might be another option. imagine a Jazz neck, but a little stiffer and focused more articulate.

Re: Which neck pick up to pair with an Alternative 8 bridge?

Jazz can do warm just fine IME. I second Darth. You can also use a Jazz bridge in the neck, little hotter wind, little more mids. Never tried it though.

Re: Which neck pick up to pair with an Alternative 8 bridge?

someone gave me an Entwistle HDN pickup to try. he told me that it's a high output, bright pickup. maybe i'll try that first then if i liked the bright tone in a neck pickup, i might get a JazzN.

Six string version of the Sentient. Or the Demon.

Re: Which neck pick up to pair with an Alternative 8 bridge?

Demon is amazing, the Sentient is sweet, too. Would be hard pressed to choose. I'd never go with a jazz-n, though. Not enough output, by far, to go with the alt8. Unless you add an alnico8 and make it an j8zz-n.

Re: Which neck pick up to pair with an Alternative 8 bridge?

Now orpeho, did the OP say s/he would be using the neck and bridge together? Or raise any concerns over outputs? We aren't here to make assumptions about how other players like to roll. Maybe the awesome smart dudes like you and me like Singlecut designs with Floyds and 3 hums, but we can't expect everyone to be on our level.

Re: Which neck pick up to pair with an Alternative 8 bridge?

I haven't touched a singlecut in weeks... only strats for the last few months plus a tele on occasion ;)

But still. Why would anyone go with a neck pickup that's so clean, as if you're going from a dirty to a clean amp? I wouldn't ever do that. but granted, i'm making assumptions here.

Re: Which neck pick up to pair with an Alternative 8 bridge?

If I may hijack the thread for just a moment, could anyone suggest a single coil (in size) neck pickup for a neck-through ESP, 24 frets, ebony fb? The bridge pickup will be either DD or the A8 or something of that caliber. JazzN is a great neck humbucker and if there was a SC with a similar EQ curve I'd be all over it the soonest. Sorry about the hijack (?)
