So I ended up not going for a Distortion and getting a Black Winter instead. The '59B in the neck sounds, as expected, a bit boomy. I've got a polised A4, a RCA4, and a RCA5 on the way to see which I like best. :)

Well, you did well. The Black Winter is a really great choice, too. And I think it is certainly more versatile.

The Black Winter was an odd one for me. I was expecting a Distortion on steroids. Kinda like an in-between the Invader and the Distortion. But rather, it sounds to me more like a refined Distortion. Sort of in-between the JB and the Distortion, but cleaner and tighter than both. It's a cool pup, but it seems like it has the complete opposite EQ profile compared to the '59. I hope a different magnet in the '59 can fix that. Wonder if I should've gone for A2 or A3 instead.

Refined JBish DD??

Well ****...the Frodo font scared me off, but that sounds cool

Makes me want a set. And another guitar to put them in.

Kinda surprised the 59 sounds boomy in a 24-fret bolt-on, especially with a Floyd. But the A4 should tighten it up nicely. And yes, even out those mids some, although the 59B is a little richer in the mids than a 59N to begin with.

I do like the font, lol.

Do it! The more time I've spent with them, the more I like them. :)

Maybe the '59 would be better with a Custom or a Dimebucker or something with more low-end emphasis than the Black Winter. Then again, I am super picky about neck pickups, lol.

I have not played a Black Winter - but everything I have read suggests what you said; A refined, more subtle/flexible version of the Distortion.

And this thread is cracking me up....because you know, when you are using a distortion/Black Winter, the subtle nuances in tone of a neck pickup are critical!

You are running this guitar through like a cranked 5150 or something probably....hahahahahah. Like anyone will notice what the magnet did unless it is like from a ceramic to an a2!

I would not think a 59 would boom in that guitar. What amp and what music are you playing, and how do you use the neck pickup????

Re: Which of these neck pickups do you think would pair best with a DD?

Well, if pickups weren't all about nuances, I could very well be using the stock V7/V8 that came with the guitar.

But to me, they're all about nuances, so why settle when the tone I want is only a magnet swap away? :)
