Which One - Slash Humbucker vs Whole Lotta Humbucker

Can anyone tell me the difference between the Slash Humbuckers and the Whole Lotta Humbuckers?

I like the sound of both artists and am not sure which to go for, or would one of each work?

If one of each which would you choose for the bridge and neck?

What kind of guitar will you be installing them in, what sort of amp do you use and what kind of sound do you hear in your head?

Or just have 2 guitars to use for both sets.

They will be going in an Ibanez RG 550 for now running through a Yamaha DG130 Amp and Marshall 4x12 cabinet, unless she who must be obeyed is home then it will be played through a Roland Cube :-(

I have experience with the Slash Alnico II Pro's.
What would you like to know?
What type of music you play and what do you want to get out of your guitar?

Resurrecting this thread. I'm torn between these two for my Les Paul Traditional Pro. Thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks!

You could always do a custom coil using both and see what that sounds like..?

Try each, then a mix.

Re: Which One - Slash Humbucker vs Whole Lotta Humbucker

I'm curious about the differences in these pickups too. I would put them in a Gibson SG. Playing British blues, 70's rock, and maybe some 80's hard rock. I already have an SG with Seth Lovers, BTW. How would the Slash and WLH be different/similar?

Re: Which One - Slash Humbucker vs Whole Lotta Humbucker

In my opinion, the Slash / A2P has a distinct Duncan hair metal crunch but with great dynamics. It's tricky because most youtube demos are guys playing G'n'R, but I was listening to Akira Takasaki circa 85: I was impressed how he had that Duncan hair metal sound with vintage dynamics & bite, like a hybrid of Vivian Campbell & Yngwie. It has a distinct focused Wrraaannnh vowel sound that would make it very different from the rounder skrunch of the WLL. I'd be curious to hear Steve Vai fans play an A2P with high gain.

i like the WLH set a lot because of the big, bold bottom end and generally hairy 70s grunt.
I have not tried the slash set so i cant comment on that sorry.

Re: Which One - Slash Humbucker vs Whole Lotta Humbucker

I haven't tried the WLH set, but the Slash set is really nice. The clip below is through a Marshall 1987 with a Carl Martin PlexiTone in front. Pretty basic rock setup. I think the pickups shine for down and dirty rock n roll. They also sound really good clean.

Has no one had any experience of either of these???

I'm getting slammed for it on another thread, but my experience with PAF types..... you can make up whatever difference inherent in the pickups at the amp.... So flip a coin, pick one, you'd be happy with either.

Re: Which One - Slash Humbucker vs Whole Lotta Humbucker

All my answers/comments (without reading but a few of the others)

1. Don't choose - get TWO guitars
2. Just get A2P's and 59's and save $$$
3. Don't hate the cube!!!!!!!!
4. Tell "She who must be obeyed" that she is "She who must make me a sammich and STFU"*

I am not a fan of pups tweeked for specific artists and specific guitars because they made the tones YOU learned to love with the stock versions. Now in their fame they are getting stuff tweeked to perfection for them. Might not work for you, or likely not matter. That said - I have never plkayed either pup, and for obvious reasons don't care to.

*This solution actually works be cause she'll kick you out. Then you get all the guitars you want and play however you feel like it, whenever you want.

Re: Which One - Slash Humbucker vs Whole Lotta Humbucker

Serious answer.

Let's consider we love Slash for his neck tones, and Pagey for his Bridge tones. so A2P neck, 59 bridge. Youll have a really wide ranging guitar that will nail the tones you want in the position you expect those sounds from. Middle tones will be a nice balance of the two.

That helped the OP a lot.

I just got a WLH bridge in a all Mahogany set neck guitar.
First Impression: very full and smooth, not a thin sound in it (even split), even high strings sound smooth & full, power chords have vocal quality.
I would not put a WLH bridge in guitar that was too dark sounding / lacked definition, I would imagine the WLH would rule a mahogany guitar with a maple top.

I just wanted to respond to this bit. I have not played the WLH set. I have played the APH set for many years and own the Slash set. I can tell you that while they do share a bit of sonic DNA, these two sets do sound and feel different. Enough so that you can hear a feel a difference. The Slash bridge is much more meaty than the standard APH bridge. The Slash set also has an almost single-coil attack to the notes. It's kinda like a really good cross between a P90 and a good PAF style humbucker. I can tell you that I certainly don't chase Slash's tone. However, I do consider him to have a good ear for tone. For me the Slash bridge pickup just sounds and feels really damn good.

Not trying to argue or be a dick. Just thought I would share my experiences with these two particular pickups.
