Which pick up for metal?

Hi there!

I was recently offered a cort m600 with a seymour pick up in the bridge for a very cheap price...I now how to decide which pick up i'm gonna choose and I am a newbie in this field trying to figure things out...I play metal, but need a versatile pick up ranging from rock to metal ( metal in the vein of Soilwork, Testament and sevendust) Any suggestions?

When I ask the tone wizard it suggests the SH4 JB and the SH5 Duncan Custom, any comments on those two?
When the tone wizard ask which guitar its meant for, I choose the Les paul (cause both the Lp and the M600 uses humbuckers), but since the m600 isnt quite a les paul but neither a strat or a tele, i am quite confused which guitar model to choose in the tone wizard?

I have good experiences playing rock and metal with a JB. It's a very good starting pickup, as it's very versatile and popular, it suits many people with many styles. I believe that for example The Gathering from Testament was recorded largely with a JB.

I'd go for an EMG 85 bridge. It really is, IMHO, and many others opinions, the ultimate metal pickup.

If James Murphy was on The Gathering, then it was an 85 bridge .

No offense to James Murphy, but you know who else was on that record? I bet you do. The use of JB is just something I've heard on the net. I can't say that it's 100% true, but what can you say that of?

The EMG stuff slays as well, though.

I'm an Invader fan. They do metal quite well.

i like the duncan custom for metal. tight brutal chugs with clarity. that said, your amps do play a big part in the tone chain. you should go for a pickup that complement your amp's tonal signature.

I personally think the Custom will be a better starting point than the JB. It seems like the JB is a LOVE it or HATE it pickup. Some folks love it, the only time I think it sounds good is when it hits the bottom of a trash can! LOL!!!!!!!!!

The Custom, Distortion, and Dimebucker are all great pickups for metal and rock, with the Custom probably being the most versatile of the three. I've always thought of the Custom as being the ultimate "rock" pickup. It just has that huge, open, chunky sound that always brings a smile to my face.

I've had the JB for many years in one of my guitars and I've never thought of it as being a good metal pickup. It just doesn't have the thickness or balls for playing metal. The JB excels at lead playing, but I've never been a fan of it for rhythm.

Personally i would go with an Invader or maybe the custom. I love the Invader, but i don't if it does versatality I havnt tried anything else on it but metal I use a different guitar for that. but i think it is the ultimate rhythym pickup for metal not to good at solos due to the lack of treble. I would go with the custom or Invader. ya man

Its all just a matter of preference. I like the JB more than the Custom, because i found the Custom to have too much bass and too much definition. while the JB have killer harmonics, great on solos and very tight when doing riffs. dont get me wrong, i still like the Custom for rhythm, but i cant give up the JB's soloing capabilities. dont let that "thin-sounding JB" hype fool you, a lot of metal players today use the JB, and they dont even sound close to being thin. with the right guitar and the right amp, the JB can be crushing.

the Distortion is also a good pup for metal.

How is the Custom for getting harmonics out? I played an LP with a 500t in it and was amazed at how easy it was to get harmonics to scream out of the thing. After that experience I started looking at the Distortion because of its similar design. Is the custom this harmoncs-friendly?

Regarding amps kontra pick up...
I'm using a valvestaTE 8100 with a 4x12 1960a cab, but if I succeed in selling it i will go for the Ashdown Fallen angel (all tube) amp..

Any comments on which of the SH4 JB/SH5 Custom/SH6 Distortion that would be best with the a tube (Ashdown) amp?

Im in search of a pickup that provides thick sound/distortion and with ease will give me chunky/Heavy sound when i palm mute.
