OKAY!!!! I'm buying a Pick-up for my Fender Deluxe Fat Strat.
Alder Body, Rosewood Fretboard, Tex Mex Single coils in neck and middle pos.
Tuned to Drop B, used to play Slipknot and Slipknot type music...
I want to choose between the Invader, The Distortion, the JB, or the Full Shred.
I know Slipknot uses EMG's but I want a passive Humbucker, and that means duncan.

Please Help Me By Choosing one of these Pups!

hi, well i think the invader will do a good job for a slipknot type tone, its solid and more bassy than pretty much all the other pickups that you mentioned...the duncan distortion can do the job too but it'll be a little too trebly and the jb doesn't sound AS clear as when its tuned to more regular tunings.... so yea i think an invader will do you good...

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

+1, the invader is a drop-tuning leviathan :laugh2:

its a pretty brutish pickup, but its got lovely palm mutes and the like..

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

The Invader has long been a favorite of mine, but I just dropped it in an alder Charvel strat last night, and HOLY SH*T!!! This might be *the* metal tone.

I will have to say something else besides the invader. I am voting for the full shred. Reason why, I had an invader in a BC Rich that was tuned in B. With the invader every note was mudded together, sounded way too dark, and quite honestly, I think it sounded very, very bad in that guitar with that tuning. Though it sounded allright in the same guitar with standard tuning. The full shred will give Lots of clarity, more mids, and highs that you will need for that tuning. Out of the pickups you have mentioned, I would choose them in this order, Full Shred, JB, Distortion, And in last place, the Invader.

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

I voted for the Distortion.

Slipknot uses 81s.....an Invader sounds nothing like an 81....way too bassy for that tuning. Stuff like that is great for thumping on low E (or B) palm mutes, but Slipknots a little more complex that that.

the JB doesnt sound as clear in regular tuning? dude, WTF are you on? the only clearer high output pup than the JB would be the full shred.
it will in no way turn muddy when you use it in lower tunings. i went to drop C on my set of strings (10-46) and it retained that agressiveness and the palm mutes are to die for.

from my experience, the best duncan pup for downtuned music is the JB

and i hope you didnt compare the clear-ness of the JB to the invader.. cos then i want some of the stuff you've been smoking plz

I said Invader above, but the JB would be a good choice, too. Honestly, there's no passive pickup that really sounds anything like an EMG 81, so if that's the tone you want, active is the way to go.

Why are you so dead set against active?

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

I'm going to go with Screaming Daisy and say Distortion. The clarity you'll get with low tuning under high gain will surprise you.

My order: Distortion, Full Shred, JB, Invader. The Invader will be complete mud with low tuning.

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

My band plays Duality and I have searched for the right pickup and finally found it. The PATB1 is the bomb. Its kinda like the JB but More bass and less highs and meatier and less compressed. Try it and I guarantee it sounds just like Duality, at least with my Dual Rectifier.

I just really really like Duncan Pick-ups and I want to remain loyal to my company... But If it means going active I will probably choose the EMG 81 over the LiveWire Heavy Metal.

But doesn't anybody thinkg the LiveWire would do some Slipknot sounding stuff in Drop B?

Imagine that you completely removed all bass & treble from all of your gear (the amp, pickup, preamp, the wood the guitar is made of... ALL of it) and replaced it with all mids. That's what you'll get with the LW-Hmet.

The Custom is another good low-tuned pickup.

Another reason is because I will still be using the 2 Fender Tex mex Pick-ups and I don't want a HUGE difference in volume between pups...
I'm still considering the 81 though.

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

Go to EMG's website. I believe there's an explanation on how to mix active & passive to good result.

Their best advice is to buy some more EMG stuff and install it in my guitar, to even out the sounds and levels of the different pick-ups... That's why I would rather Buy a Duncan and put up with whatever different there is in the volume of the pups.
I have an 18 volt pup in my other strat, Passives are just easier.

Also, JB, what tuning is your Charvel in?

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

With the Invader, standard, drop C, & drop B. Just goofing around, I took the E down to G, and it still sounded badass.

BTW, I just surfed over to the Hamer site and saw that the Standard is alder, which is a great wood for the Invader.

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

JB, you are awesome and are a super help to me in this decision. But I still havn't made the Decision... Duncan's are all so good, you even said both the Invader and JB would be good.
After more thought I decided I really don't want to try mixing any actives with my tex mex pups, so I guess I'll just be checking out the EQ's of these 4 pups and keep thinking until the paycheck is cashed...

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

JB, personally, would you choose the Invader over the Distortion for an alder body guitar tuned to Drop B, I will be playing slipknot, but I through in more solos than them, so I need clarity in that department, I am personally a fan of the Invader.
Do you think the Invader should be my choice? I'm trustin' ya.
