JB, personally, would you choose the Invader over the Distortion for an alder body guitar tuned to Drop B, I will be playing slipknot, but I through in more solos than them, so I need clarity in that department, I am personally a fan of the Invader.
Do you think the Invader should be my choice? I'm trustin' ya.

If my opinion helps, I would pick one of the three others over the invader. Check out my previous post. I dont think you will be happy with the invader personally for that tuning.

Just get a Line 6 amp and you`ll get that Slipknot sound!!!!!

Slipknot use Marshall Jmp-1 through Carvin and bogner cabinets. line 6 isnt such a good idea.

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

if this helps. im in a band and im using a 5150 the other guitarist is using a Jmp-1 with an invader equiped guitar. my guitar has a full shred. i have their sound nailed to the T. the invader is a great pickup i dont see where you get that its muddy at lower end. we tune to c and drop the c to a B like Drop D tuning but 2 steps down

One of their guitarists (Mick?) used to use a POD Pro into a Mesa power amp.

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

I was pretty much set on the Invader all day today, but the Tone Wizard says I should check out the Duncan Custom... It seems like a nice high output Pick-up, can it handle the Metal Rhythms and Solos as well as the Invader?

Also, If I do get the Invader, do you think I should consider some new single coils for the middle and neck position, I like the way they sound now with the stock humbucker, but with more output in the bridge position I may reconsider the other pick-ups as well...

I always appreciate your help.

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

the invader is not good for detuning to muddy too bassy it doesnt have a good tone

Can you suggest another High Output pup that would be better than the Invader?

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

hey man.. if you're interested in how a JB sounds in alder and in dropC, check out my clips.. Black Label, groove thing and demise those are done with that tuning.. i'm cant play like that though cos i bend the strings when i fret them a bit too much lol

the JB just GROWLS like a hellhound on methane

line6 will get you all the way and further.. their sound isnt anything ground breaking..

about mick.. check the line6 site, he's auditioning a spyderII and he rips it UP! doesnt mean he plays one, but i can imagine him using it as a practice/warmup amp

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

if nobody likes the invader. why is it the most voted pickup. my Dimarzio evolutions in my jem do the slipknot sound well they stay really tight when detuned and have plenty of bottom end. I have a full shred in my strat and thats also amazing. the full shred has a bit more bottom and grunt than the evolution but just a slight more muddy. though i could not chose between the pickups thier both great. you dont need a really high output pickup to nail the sound, most of it comes from the amps and cabs.

Kac, don't let those EMG salesman (or anyone else) talk you toward the EMG HZ4 pickups. These are supposed to be the passive alternatives for the 81/85. Although these aren't as bad as anyone says, the Duncans you mentioned are far better.

Just my 2 cent.

Yeah, I bought a Set of EMG-HZ's before for a Washburn HSH guitar with a Floyd Rose, they were alright, but I definetly know better now!

They've been 100% tube since day one. Until Subliminal Verses, Mick used a VHT almost exclusively, and Jim used a Mesa DC-10 & Peavey 5150.

I'm still saying Invader. I've always loved it, and it sounds the best in alder. I think a tremelo may be the ingredient that keeps the Invader from getting muddy.

ive read soooo many places that Mick used A Jmp-1 into mesa poweramps and Carvin/Bogner cabs. never heard anything about a VHT. im not arguing as im no expert but im just saying what ive read and been told.

That's great Because I've decided to go with the Invader. My signature gives the specs for what the guitar will be in a couple weeks.
Got the Maple neck w/ maple fretboard on it now, and the LSR nut, can't wait to get the pick-up and new tuners.

Re: Which Pick-up for Slipknot Type Music

I am gonna be REALLY shocked if Invader + maple board + maple neck + trem = mud.
