Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

I use the JB and it's great for metal, it's clear and articulate, not so mushy. I can hear all the notes I play. I'd think a Dimebucker would be great for what I described the JB as too! Just the Dimebucker is hotter, so it has more bite and harmonics

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

well really depends. personally i like the PATB-2 Parellel Axis Dist. Trembuck. for a lot of my axes. But in general for an only metal axe i think the DD would be my choice

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

The Distortion RULES on metal. I'd bet the Dimebucker is great too but I've never used or heard one. I think Robert and Brisk have Dimebuckers ? MrHM.

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

jb is great for lead playing in all types of music, from blues to metal; but if it was rhythm i was going for than it would be dd

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

I have a JB and a Distortion in my ibanez and so far I'm really happy with them. JB is just awesome for clean stuff and leads. When using the distortion pedal, the JB sounds really clear. Ooo, just love the tone! lol. The distortion gives me a nice chunky tone that'll be sure to fit your metal needs. As fusion101 said, JB is great for leads and a DD would be great for a rhythm role.

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

I use a JB in one, a DiMarzio Super Distortion in another, and I'm waiting for an EMG 81/85 set for the third.

I play mostly rhythm.

The JB gives me more chunk, great crunch, lots of bite (treble), and great full stops. Tends to feel compressed on the attack, but is easy to control.

The Super Distortion has a smoother gain, more mids, a heavier bottom end, better palm mutes, great feedback. Can be hard to tame at times and doesn't full stop very well (I guess that's the problem with having great feedback).

I'll let you know about the EMG's whenever they arrive.

I've settled on a SH-5, it's really all I could ever want in a metal pup. Tight bottom end, crunch, attitude and most importantly, BALLS. When you hear this thing it will amaze you how thick it is. I've heard very good things about the SH-6, so that's a great contender as well. I personally didn't like the SH-4, because it didn't give me the kind of bottom end I was looking for and was a little ultra bright for me. However, it was in Strat shaped guitar so it was probably a good amount brighter than my LP in the first place...

No doubt- there are TONS of metal guys doing the EMG 81/85 thing. I just don't like the way they sound. Too compressed and not as open/airy or as musical as passive SD's. They just don't react to my playing style like the SD's do. SH-5 Custom gets my vote!

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

I use a Custom in my guitar but if I were to go metal I'd probably grab a distortion. I haven't played the Dimarzios though. If the Super D is good split it might have been worth trying out. Didn't dig the sh-6 split.

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

Dimebucker without a doubt. If you haven't tried one, I highly recommend it. JB is a great choice too, although not sure if its tight enough on the low end for my tastes. Hot rails is great if you have a Fender, and I'd also say the custom or anything in the custom line could be great for metal. Still I'd go with a Dimbucker, I love mine.

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

The Custom model covers a lot of bases, including metal.

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

Rudy,i went through the same dimlema man, save yourself a lot a AGG and get the custom! :)

I have a strat body with a floyd and it sounded pretty good...but not my favorite. The floyd makes the guitar sound a little soft. I dont want to rout my other strats deeper. The 500T is a bit taller than regular humbuckers.

I love the 500T / 496R combination in my 2003 R8 Les Paul. My biggest problem is that I am not a LP guy, but the tone of that guitar is one of the best I have ever heard and I have heard a lot :alcoholic

Re: Which pickup would you choose for playing Metal?

No Full Shred?

No Custom?

Out of those I'd have to go with a Screamin Demon
