P90's are cool as hell but unless you want to route your guitar and get another pick guard they wont fit. Now SD does make humbucker sized P90's called the Phat Cats that you could install without any changes. They are OK but far from my favorite in that type of pickup. Doc already mentioned the GFS Mean 90's which are great and not so expensive either. Riogrande and Bare Knuckle also make really cool versions of this kind of pickup.

Sorry, I'm a pickup noob, so I didn't consider that the P-90s wouldn't fit in my humbucker guitar.
Anyway, what about these Phat Cats by SD?

Well I'm sorry you feel that way. I had the Custom 5 in a guitar. It was so bright and thin that my Schaller Golden 50 in the neck overran it. I like bright pickups, but the Custom 5 is just way too extreme.

Then i would think you wired it wrong... it doesnt sound like a single coil at all.

I've heard a few samples on youtube of these two pickups... Which one do you like the most? And above all: which one sounds "fatter"?

i dont know if a p90 in the bridge is a good idea if a humbucker is too bright. a humbucker sized p90 in the neck would probably be great for you, but if you go humbucker sized p90 in the bridge get a really hot one.

the pearly gates neck and c5 (with roughcast magnet) was my favorite set in my sg

This is good advice I was going to say the fattest of the lot is the RioGrande Fat bastard followed by the BKP Stockholme Both are P90's but in the way that your overly aggressive delinquent little brother is part of your family also.

Gotta a question: on Rio Grande's website, BBQ buckers in the bridge are sold in set with Genuine Texas in the neck. What about this combination? Or do you recommend having BBQ buckers both in the neck and bridge? Thx, and forgive me for being such annoying with all these questions :)

I think they make a good set. if you want a brighter neck, then a JazzN or '59N would be a good choice.

I like the Custom 5. I don't find it to be mid scooped, just not mid pushed. Really, quite an articulate pickup.

The examples that you are replying about are indeed true P-90 sized pups. But still, there is no problem mounting them in a humbucker rout if you buy mounting rings designed to install P-90s in a bucker guitar.

But, Duncan does make humbucker-sized P-90s that drop right in...they're called Phat Cats.

The neck is much warmer than the bridge. I doesn't seem like this is the direction the OP wants to go. A BBQ or C8 in the bridge would make him happy.

It has warmth, is clean and articulate, has a little extra single-coil bite to add to its articulation, has character/personality oozing out from every pore, and can get raunchy when driven hard (but still retains its articulate nature)...think Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers, or Leslie West of Mountain. It comes in chrome, nickel, gold, or black covers.

For the neck, you really can't do much better than the Screamin Demon (don't let the name fool you). An extremely versatile pup for neck or bridge (my absolute favorite neck pup for full, even EQ, articulate and clean, but responds extremely well to distortion or overdrive).

It's an old thread, but here's my 2 cents. I have an Epiphone SG G-400 with GFS Mean 90s. I really like them and think they add some personality to the guitar. But, these days, I'm wanting something different from this SG. I like the tone, but, to me, the SG asks for a little more aggressive tone. It's something completely personal, but just my feeling. I think they would do great in Les Pauls too (if I had another Les Paul, I'd might try them in it). I don't think the tone I'm getting matches the guitar right now. Ok, maybe I'm just crazy. hehe
