don't worry too much on equipment. its mostly on the fingers. spend time studying SRV's style , techniques and nuances of his playing and you can get close to his tone on most equipment. i once watched a guy in a bar got really close to SRV's tone with just a stock Squier Strat and a Marshall MG50FX connected directly to the board via the amp's line out.

yup, definitely the fingers. tho if really are interested in that texas blues tone, a nice little tube and couple of ssl-1s should be an affordable option.

I think 2 main ingredients in that sound are alder/rosewood strat and Alnico 5 6.3K pickups....or very close to that.

Out of the readily available strat pickups, I've come closest to the SRV sound with Fender Fat 50's, not Texas Specials, which are too middy. The pickups I own that really nail it are Chubtone 63's, but that was a small boutique winder.......not so readily available.

Then, 11's + and a cranked tube amp.
