Which pickups on a Les Paul to get this type of sounds?

Re: Which pickups on a Les Paul to get this type of sounds?

For something with a maple neck I'd say the Jazz in the neck position but it may be too dark for all the mahogany in a LP.

A Jazz is anything but dark. It is a bright, scooped pickup.

I've never had the Jazz neck be too dark. In any solid body, semi, or hollowbody.

On a proper Les Paul with mahogany and maple cap:

Neck pickup: on the clean channel, very round, full, sweet sounding, creamy. Not a hint of shrill.

Bridge pickup: on the distorted channel, very thick, tight and focused modern distortion when the guitar volume is on 10, then lowering the volume it gradually turns in to a more classic-ish PAF tone.

Is that possibile? Which pickups? Thanks a lot.

What is a proper Les Paul ?
And where can i buy one ?

Re: Which pickups on a Les Paul to get this type of sounds?

I finally got the guitar. It is a 2017 Gibson Les Paul Standard. I find the Burstbucker Pros pretty "nasal", a bit boxy and with a somewhat spongy bottom end. For my taste they are pretty bad pickups, considering they come in a 2500$ guitar...

I'm now considering all your kind advices and I throw in the mix some Craig Vineham custom made pickups too... I had them in the past and they sounded great.

I suppose it's possible someone modified one of mine since I bought it used. I have 3 and the one in my LP is dark and muddy.

They could have added an alnico II magnet, which is about the only way it would sound dark and muddy.

@davidrf....
I agree about the BB pickups. I didn’t like them from the start either.
I put a calibrated set of BKP Rebel Yell pups in it and they are great. I left it like that for a few years.
About 2 years ago I swapped in a Super Distortion bridge and 36th Anny Neck. Another great combo.
If I decide to swap in the future I think I’ll go with a Custom Custom bridge and possibly a Sentient neck.

The Jazz that i owned was extremely bright in my LP so i don't know where you get that idea from ??

I thought about this some more and I suspect I have a faulty pot / switch because I pulled that Jazz out of a Firebird Zero where it was quite bright and put it in a LP with all new controls and it's very dark. At first I speculated that the Jazz had been altered since I bought it used but then I remembered it was the one out of my Firebird Zero, where I loved it. All I know for certain is it went from bright and musical to dark and dreadful when I moved it from one guitar to the other.

Re: Which pickups on a Les Paul to get this type of sounds?

Some people say a great deal in making the sound nasal is given by the wiring/electronics and not by the pickups (in my case). Do you think replacing the Gibson stock electronics (all PCB stuff) with a very high quality stuff would noticeably improve the sound? Thanks

Re: Which pickups on a Les Paul to get this type of sounds?

As long as the electronics are in spec (500k pots are close to 500k- and I have no reason to believe they aren't), the fact that they use PCB for the electronics shouldn't have much effect on the sound. Unless you want a different kind of wiring, I'd see no need to replace it.
