which pickups to choose for Santana SE (want vintage style; Warren Haynes-esque)

Hi all,

I'd like to swap out the stock pickups of my PRS Santana SE for some vintage-sounding pickups -- to get the Santana SE to come as close as possible to a crunchy Les Paul sort of sound. I've been listening to a lot of Gov't Mule lately, and if possible, I'd like to achieve a tone similar to that on Warren's heavier stuff.

At first consideration, I just figured I'd swap in a set of SH-1 '59s because I got the impression those were just like the standard for a hot, vintage Les Paul sort of sound. But after listening to other models' sample clips on the site, I'm unsure which pickups would be best for getting my Santana SE (which has the tremolo bridge, NOT the stop-tailpiece) to achieve that vintage crunch, yet also be able to crank out some heavy tunes, as well.

I'm most definitely not interested in having my guitar sound anything like a metal or a "Dream Theater" sort of sound, but I would like the guitar to be able to get heavy (with thick distortion, yet not too tinny). I also own a Gibson SG '61 reissue, and those classic '57 pickups are definitely a little too warm and not high enough output for me. I'm looking for pickups that can deliver a lot of sustain, good heavy vintage-style crunch, yet not be too brittle and thin sounding.

If any of you have access to Gov't Mule's stuff, refer to Warren's tone on "Rockin' Horse," "Blind Man in the Dark," "Bad Little Doggie," and "Wandering Child."

As a sidenote, the guitar's body is made of mahogany.

Also, should I take into consideration the fact that my Santana SE has the tremolo bridge opposed to a stop-tailpiece?

And just as a final question, what difference would installing the pickups with covers make?

I'm new to the whole pickup swapping world, and would appreciate any advice on this decision.

Thanks,
Aaron

A double cutaway guitar will never sound exactly like a single cutaway guitar like a Gibson Les Paul because the neck is longer and more flexable on the double cutaway guitar. Then you have the vibrato which a Les Paul does not have and that'll change the tone too, compared to an LP with a tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece. Plus the body is a little thicker on the Les Paul.

Still, for your PRS, I'd recommend the Duncan Pearly Gates set. That's the set Warren Haynes used alot!

Anyone have advice on whether the Pearly Gates in my Santana SE will be too harsh and gritty since the SE is thinner than a Les Paul?

Any other suggestions?

Iv'e used the Pearly Gates in superstrats including a mohogony superstrat and it wasn't too harsh. It was pretty smooth actually, but with a nice clear "shimmer" on top that I really like. Really sings. I think a PG would be very good for Warren Haynes type stuff in a mohogony, including the neck, PRS.

No. I had a PG bridge in a strat with a light weight body and it wasn't harsh at all. It's bright but real smooth when overdriven.

im a big mule/haynes fan. hes used pearly gates for a long time, especially the bridge pup. not sure id go for that in the se.
if it was me, id put a patb-3 in the bridge and a seth lover in the neck. the seth is similar to the pg but with a little more bottom and less upper mids. the patb-3 is a 9.6k tremspaced bucker that should work well for the bad little doggie type tone as well as being a good all around bucker

I'd use a CC/59n in that guitar. That combo is one that'll make you happy as soon as you hear it. I was going to say Seth neck, but I think you need 4 lead, so you can split the coils.

Put an Alnico II mag in a '59. I put one in a '59 Trembucker once...sounded like an uncovered waxpotted Seth Trembucker to me.

I have an all mahogany PRS, I have a CC/aph2 set in it at the moment at is sounds exactly how i want it to sound. The aph2 is very strat like in the top end, but very smooth and buttery. You cant go wrong with a PAF type pup in the neck. I have tried the stock pickups (which I found to muddy in the neck and not tight or raw enough in the bridge). At first i swapped the bridge pickup for a custom which I got a really nice hard rock sort of a tone that was tight and cut through nicely it was very articulate but definetly not thin which i like (one of the reasons i like PRS). But i found the highs had a little to much sizzle (harshness) so i changed the magnet to an Alnico2 in the custom for a (custom custom) and now its sounds very thick like a lespaul, but it still has that articlulation and cuts through the mix really nicely. I love it
