Which practice axe do I get?

Re: Which practice axe do I get?

What do you mean when you say practise axe? What guitars / amps do you own?? What music are you into and what sound and feel are you looking for??

Re: Which practice axe do I get?

If you're looking to buy from MF, I'd rule out the Squiers. They make some great guitars but IMHO there's a fair bit of variance and I wouldn't buy one without playing it first.

My next question would be "What do you mean by 'practice axe'"? Is this going to be your only guitar for the time being or is it a non-main guitar that you'll be banging on? If the latter, you might want to take the guitar's scale length (25.5" vs 24.75") and either go with the same scale to keep things consistent or a different scale length to shake things up.

Re: Which practice axe do I get?

If you're not in a hurry, my Generation EXP should be in, in the next couple days. Its a nice HSS configuration, and I'll write a mini-review of it.

Shoot, for that matter, you can come over and play it. :laugh2:

BTW - $166 at Music Depot, on Ramona rd.

Re: Which practice axe do I get?

$166 at Music Depot? very cool! I never find very good deals here in town. Thanks for the tip!

By practice axe, Im needing a decent axe that I will keep at work to play on my lunch breaks and keep with me where ever in case a jam session comes up or if Im waiting for something.( I took a guit with me once while waiting for my truck to be fixed.) It needs to be decent player and something that would respond well to a pickup upgrade down the road.

My current aresenal are:
Squier strat that has been completely modded. (sperzels, bone nut, 3 ply pickguard, 500k pots with push pull to split bridge bucker, Lace sensor blue, silver and Duncan C5 and Dunlop straplocks)
Japanese Squier Strat (Marble pickguard with Carvin Ap11s and Dunlop Straplocks)
Gibson Explorer (Black with mirror pickguard, chrome pup rings, Duncan 59b in the neck and C4 in the bridge and Dunlop Straplocks)
Epi Ace Frehley LP ( Paf Pro Neck, Super Distortion mid and bridge, New Jack, pots, wiring and Dunlop Straplocks)
89 Ibanez RG570 (mint) ( D-Tuna, Duncan 59b in neck, Bill L 250Hp mid and C5 bridge, Dunlop straplocks)
Taylor 814ce
So, none of my babies are for that kind of abuse..

Now can you help??

Re: Which practice axe do I get?

Id agree with nuntius,if its just something you want to bring with you and play on breaks then an acoustic is proboly a good idea, and you can impress ppl by playing "nice" songs..:laugh2:

Its your call tho..

i've been there once, me and my friend came from the beaches so it was a long drive and when we got there this guy that worked there who by the way sucked ass we saw him trying to play it was pretty humorous and he wouldnt let us try out any of the guitars behind the desk, that meant no LPs, he said that he will let us try them out if we give him the money to buy them.....talk about ass hole

Re: Which practice axe do I get?

Ive thought about an accoustic ya'll but being in an office, I have to be quiet. I usually do headphones thru my zoom 505.

Yeah, I have a bud in tampa and he says the good shops there look at you and if you can play a bit or look gainfully employed, they try to put a paul or PRS of fine axe in your hand. That way, nothing else will do. Here in Jax, they dont want you to touch anything top shelf without showing cash.. It stinks.

I think I know exactly who you're talking about. If you ever go in there again, ask for Jimmy. He's pretty cool. At the same time, I gotta admit, I never mess with the ones "behind-the-counter". I'm an "off-the-shelf" kinda guy. :laugh2:

BloodRose: While the Peavey Gen would be nice, I would think one of these would be perfect for what you're looking for:

Squier Bullet Special / Epiphone Les Paul Jr.

Edit: Image changed to URL to save forum bandwidth.

If you wanted to spend just a bit more, the Les Paul Special II gives you a pair of humbuckers for $150.

(Of course, then you're only $16 away from being back to the HSS Generation.) ;)

yep, I think it would be worth the extra $16. I appreciate the suggestion, but any of those bullets Ive played have been crap. Im not a squier hater either, I have 2.. Id rather spend a couple bucks extra and get something I can swap pups in and have a player too.. If I was going for just play lowest dollar, Id get a Kramer $69 strat copy.
See, alterior motive, If I get the PV V model, I can try a duncan custom or distortion. If I get the PV Predator with the floyd, I can true the Blues trembucker. If I get the fender strat with the single Hum, Ill try an Emg 81.

Prs style..

Re: Which practice axe do I get?

Thanks for the suggestion Metalman! For what Im spending, Id have to get the bottom line bolt on epi LP (special?) and I really dont care for those. If I got an Epi LP, Id have to go higher up the line and that would put me in the $400-700 range. (for $499 Id get a Schecter c1) Besides, one of my fav guitars is my EPI Ace Frehley.. Need something less$$ tho..

Re: Which practice axe do I get?

Yeah, cant get that one outta my head and I dont have a tele.. Why do you suggest that one??
