Which SD pickups for Wolfgang?

In my Wolfgang collection, there are no two that sound the same. Some are excellent, but sadly some have very thin sound. I'm not going to start getting replacement pickups from Peavey to try and magically find some real good ones. The goal is too replace the stock pickups but retain the cream/black look for collector's value. Has anyone done this swap in a USA Wolfgang?
Thanks!

Bro, I'm looking at doing the same thing. In terms of the look, just go with zebra pickups. If you wanted to do the neck screw coil toward the neck and the bridge screw coil toward the bridge but maintain the same creme/black orientation you could order one in reverse zebra. In terms of the tone, I would be open to suggestions myself. I've considered A2 pros for a bigger, more open tone. Anyone else try SD's for Wolfies?

Re: Which SD pickups for Wolfgang?

There's the obvious Custom Shop 78 model, but I usually associate the Wolfgangs with the Axis, and that represents Eddies higher output/higher wind pickup era. So if you wanted to go that route I'd suggest the Custom Custom, coupled with a Pearly Gates or Alnico II Pro neck. Really any PAF vibe neck pickup Duncan makes would fit the recipe of the Wolfgang, but in the bridge my vote (without totally knowing your preferences) is for the CC or 78.

Never owned one myself, but the first thing I'd try is either a Custom Custom or a 78 in the bridge with a Pearly Gates neck or a 59 neck with an A2 magnet. It really just depends on what sound you're going after, though.

Just remember you may have a harder time selling them after you modify them like Rid is talking about.

I would modify the new pups to fit. If resold, the originals would go with.
Yes, I'm definitely looking for higher output, but I still want plenty of clean character.

I fitted a Custom to mine, it sound much better than the stock Peavey PUP which was thin and squealed like pig!! It has a bigger, rounder sound now... much more versatile. I also split the coils on both PUPs for more options and both PUPs sound good when split. The Custom gives me enough dirt and clean. All the best.

Actually, I meant if you decided you didn't like how one of those pups in the guitar and wanted to sell it to buy a different pickup.

I think those would be good choices, then. They're a little hotter (especially the Custom Custom) than those stock pups, but they'll still retain a lot of clarity (especially the 78) clean or under gain. Same can be said about those neck pups I mentioned, too.
