this is the tone im after. i have Alnico pro's in my Les Paul standard right now and im wondering if maybe i have the wrong pickups for this tone.

Nice....kind of a heavy "Edge" AC 30 tone....He's got some delay in the tone and he might even be playing a strat? He's got that nice strat jangle...Hard to tell really....

Too bad you couldn't find a way to contact the player and find out what he or she is using....Nice tune!

There's some U2/Edge influence there...My guess would be a strat and not a Les Paul...

Re: which seymour humbucker will get me this tone?

The guitar sounds like Flock of Seaguls or U2. I think the amp is key.

Re: which seymour humbucker will get me this tone?

That's a Strat through a Marshall (not saying that's what he used, but I think you can get it with that). A little midrange boost (TS-9, maybe?) with some compression, maybe some chorus.

However...If you're looking for a humbucker that will do that, look for something a with a little more treble. JB would probably do it. Tweak the amp settings to give you more top and mid.

I was thinking more on the lines of the Seth Lover....Clean,articulate,and has some nice top end...The amp really is key and he does have that "Edge" delay thing going on behind his base tone...You can tell the guy has spent his time listening to U2 stuff.

And a Seth would probably do it as well, but I'm thinking you'd have to compensate more at the amp. I don't think the amp is the key. You could get the same tone out of a Twin or an AC30 or a Marshall. It's all about checks and balances. You are correct about the U2 influence, in any case.

A twin isn't going to cut it without a pedal(Way too clean)....An AC30TB or a Marshall type of tone is what I'm hearing...If the guy is into "Edge",I'd bet he uses a Vox amp....He's got a nice British sounding tone going in the audio clip...It takes more than just 1 component in the chain and it's the combination of guitar, amp, and he has some effect(s) mixed in with his overall tone..

Would be interesting to see the dude's actual setup...Both the song and the tone I Liked.

Re: which seymour humbucker will get me this tone?

I really don't think this is an amp thing. Absolutely, a mid-boost pedal (as I mentioned in the first post), such as a tube screamer will be necessary. But a Fender Twin is an incredibly versatile, CLEAN amp. You can throw whatever you want in the mix and it'll make it sound good. No, they're not good for overdrive, hence the TS-9. But the Marshall is what I said at the beginning. I think we're arguing the same side of the fence, big guy..

Antiquity equipped Strat. Treble dimed on a Marshall Plexi. That should get you close!

Re: which seymour humbucker will get me this tone?

Searching other videos of 'Forever' yeilded that the guy is always using a Les Paul (a 1976 Standard to be exact) for this song...digging further I'd found this page...
http://nathanwright.org/2008/09/23/gear-talk-daniel-carson/

..he's very fond of AC 30's (Daniel will typically run stereo into 2 British Vox AC30TB’s (Top Boost))....from what I can gather he uses Gibson Burstbuckers.

In discussions related to him people talk about brightening up thier LP, which I'm no expert at...just found these in a discusions related to him.

(this list is BY NO MEANS indicative of things Daniel has done..just might help you get that tone).

Lower the pickups and raise the adjustment screws.
Install a treble bleed cap.
Install the RS kit or 50's wiring mod.
Real 500K pots.
Aluminum stop bar.
Steel studs and different strings.

A list of his gear as of 05/09

Custom made Nash Telecaster
1976 standard Gibson Les-paul
Epiphone Casino x3

I guess I'm confused. It certainly isn't the first time, and if I've offended, I'm sorry.
