I'm entering a small local competition, which basically promotes the best musical talents in my town.
I'm going for best solo guitarist, although i usually never do this stuff live, i've decided to learn a cover song to post in.

I know most parts to these songs, but which will the best to play?

I'll post my attemp on here to see what u guys think.

Cliffs Of Dover Is Really Great Because Of The Playing, The Tone, The Feeling, Etc

Go For It And Post It Here

Re: Which song to learn?

Cliffs of Dover - great track.

Until We Say Goodbye - Joe Satriani. That'd be a good one to do instead of War. It's pretty catchy and save for a few small sweeps it's fairly straight forward for a Satch track. Very tasteful too, IMO.

I love For The Love of God, but it's fairly long so I'd be put off doing it as a single song.

Re: Which song to learn?

The reason i chose these 3 songs is because i have kick ass backing tracks of them, that are very close to the actual songs.

Looks like Cliffs.... is #1 at the moment.

Re: Which song to learn?

Do the Vai song. It's the best track for a non-guitar playing audience.
Go for the intense tear jerker and you're the winner. Trust me.:smokin:

Re: Which song to learn?

Looks like Cliffs it is, probably is the more difficult of the 3, because to be honest the majority of War and For the Love.. is technically basic stuff, but hard to pull off and does have great feel, emotion & melody.
It might take me a while to get the intro down.
And also i'll let you try and guess what guitar i'm using.

Cliffs. EJ is the only shredmeister I'm really into at all. I got damn close to nailing this song (the only thing that needed work were the hybrid picked runs at the end of the intro, and when they repeat similarly later). I spent like a week only playing guitar, and even got the crazy string skipping down.

Then I went away for summer vacation (2 months, no guitar). Not even close when I got back, but I'm starting to work up to it again.

Care to post the backing track you have for Cliffs, since you said yours are good? I've only got the original recording, and the BT would help out.
