Which soundhole pickup for distorted sounds?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to get an advise: I am looking for a soundhole pickup for my dreadnought guitar, which already has an built-in shadow pickup. Now I want for some exceptional purposes a humbucking pickup for nearing “high gain” distortion, hard rocking sounds (Yes, I know that in the described setting I’d never get a sound alike one from a solidbody guitar with high gain humbuckers). Which one would work best? I am thinking about trying Woody Hum Cancelling, Woody XL od Mag Mic. Any recommendations?

Thanks and best regards from Düsseldorf

a passive magnetic pickup would be best because it has the same impedance as a regular electric pickup and can plug straight into your amp or pedals just like any other electric.
The LR Baggs M1 will work well. The woodys are a good idea too.

These are solid suggestions, as well

Hi,

thanks a lot for your replies! As the recommendations differs a bit (passive PU vs. active Fishman Rare Earth) I will try both types and will keep one finally.

Best regards

Bill Lawrence A300, hands down the best for distorted sounds in an acoustic!

Anything with hum-cancelling will work, and just point the amp away from the guitar. I know some people that use a Woody Hum Cancelling pickup and to send to a distorted amp. They also use the built-in ultra clean piezo to send to the acoustic amp, then those are blended. It sounds fantastic.

ive used a magmic into a cranked tweed deluxe and it sounded great as long as i wasnt in the same room since then it was really rowdy. i think the humcancelling woody would be a fine choice as would the lawrence a300. trey let me borrow one of his and while its a decent acoustic pup it doesnt sound any where near as good as my magmic as far as acoustic tone into a pa or acoustic amp. into an electric amp with distortion its a lot of fun

Hi there,

here are some results: I tried fishman Neo D acoustic (passive), fishman rare earth (active), seymour duncan Woody HC. The last one was best for my purposes (and was the cheapest by far) and has a nice clean sound, too. Because of liking to tinker with old stuff I found another solution which seems to be ultimative: I integrated a Bill Lawrence U.S.A. L500XL into a feedback suppressor. The L500XL is very light and the whole construction ist very gentle and save.k-DSCN2866.JPG
