i am looking for a good trem pedal. i want something that will do subtle trem to real choppy trem. i had a boss tr-2 a few years ago. it got the sounds i was after but i have never got along with boss pedals for some reason. so what would you guys suggest? so far i have considered the gig-fx chopper buts its pretty big. the diaz tremodillo i cant find any sound clips or much info about these. and the t-rex tremster i have heard mixed feelings on their build quality.

Re: which tremolo pedal?

Guitar Player did a Tremolo roundup a few months ago. See if you can scare up a copy. It had solid reviews of a variety of pedals, from basic cheapo to boutique.

Guyatone VT-X Tube Tremolo. Huge range, warm thick sound

And totally unrelated to that, I've got one for sale on the trading post!

Re: which tremolo pedal?

I have a Marshall VibraTrem. It sounds great, and it can get the range you describe. I haven't tried the shape shifter, but that and the Electro-Harmonix Pulsar have even more paramters to tweak.

Re: which tremolo pedal?

The Fulltone Supra-Trem is very transparent and has a wide range of speeds. It can do the choppy thing very well. It also has a 1/2 speed switch and a hard/soft switch.

The only drawback is that there is no real depth or shape adjustment. The effect can only by softened by by blending less wet signal with the dry.

By the way, in a recent thread one of the bros posted a link to a series of fairly high quality YouTube pedal tests. There were many tremolo demos you might be interested in.

Re: which tremolo pedal?

I'm a big fan of the voodoo lab tremolo pedal because it uses the same style photocell/light impulse tremolo that is utilized by Fender amplifiers. I'd highly recommend it

Re: which tremolo pedal?

I am using a Boss TR-2, self modded by a Monte Allums kit (with a Burr Brown OP-amp chip).

It sounds much better than stock.

Re: which tremolo pedal?

i will check into all of those. the only problem i run into is i cant try many out before i buy. around here all the stores carry is the boss. some of them might have the shape shifter. i have found a few i like for the more subtle trem but for the real choppy sound most of them have too many features or are big. i dont care for all the crazy sounds. the sound i am looking for is like the trem in black by sevendust. i think theres a green day song that has the trem like that but slower. not sure on that one though i just heard it on the radio a few times.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the song your probably thinking of if that helps.

Yeah, that's the song I'm guessing he means.

I bought a Demeter Tremulator without trying it first, and I'm very, very happy with my purchase. It'll do very subtle all the way to the effect at the beginning of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

Re: which tremolo pedal?

The Red Witch Pentavocal Trem ended my search. You can adjust so many parts of the trem sound that you can get just about anything you have in your head from that box and it has a square waveform that's footswitchable so it can be less in your face at times and then kicked out when you really want it to be choppy and cut through the mix.
