Which tuners would you choose?

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

I've always liked the look (and especially the feel) of the Keystones on Les Pauls.

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

Any particular reason that you're set on sealed tuners? Grover makes some excellent Keystone style tuners that are just as smooth, last just as long, work just as well, and look great on a vintage style LP such as yours.

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

If your guitar isn't already drilled for Grovers, go with something else. New Grovers aren't made nearly as well as they used to be and they're heavy. The color is slightly off, but I'm a big fan of the Gotoh replacement klusons. They're even available with a top-locking mechanism similar to PRS.

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

I have the lockers on one of my Les Pauls and it never goes out of tune and I have the regular Grovers on my Studio and I tune it probably twice while I play it for an hr.
Only the G string. I am getting ready to put the Grover locking tuners on it when I tear it down for its yearly inspection and cleaning.
I swear by the Grover lockers. They make string changes faster and the tuning stability is second to none. I also have a set of them on my LTD and that guitar never goes out of tune.

Yeah, the Tulips look traditional but they suck if you gig, i used to have to fight them between songs in the middle of songs, I always was losing my G.
I am a big bender though, I bend the hell out of a Les Paul with 10-52s half step down..

Basically go with any locking tuner that fits. Grover Schaller whatever works in your guitar without having to drill the crap out of it..

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

I like the traditional kidney bean, but I have a couple of Les Pauls with the Grover keystones too. They both work and look great.

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

Neither. They are both poor quality tuners these days. I'd get yourself a set of Hipshots, Gotohs, Schallers, or Sperzels.

This. Grover Deluxes, with plastic keystones. Best of both worlds.

...and mediocre, overpriced modern-day Grover quality and bang for the buck.

You can get the same style of tuner from Gotoh, but it will be well built and have cool features, such as optional Mag-Lok and/or H.A.P. Mag-lok is virtually invisible and requires no reaming of your tuner holes, unlike other locking tuners.

Seriously, people. Grovers are in no way an "upgrade" any more. They are what needs to be upgraded from nowadays, when they come on a guitar you buy. It's a shame, as they used to be truly high quality upgrade parts. Sure, they are better than stock import tuners. But that isn't saying much.

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

I use grover locking tuners with kidney beans and have no problems. The klusons that came with my traditional are collecting dust. Not bad, just not for me

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

In sticking to the orig question, hard call, I like both, but I would say tulip style looks alil more classy

Re: Which tuners would you choose?

First, no effing Klusons!

Of those suggested, I'll go Tulip on the Standard.

However, personally, I'd go with these, because I'm classy like that:
