First of all i'm new here, so hi everyone!
I've got a question concerning which type of Pickups to choose for heavyly downtuned guitars.
Namely i've got a SG-copy for that I use 14-60gauge strings tunded down to b.
As soon as I got it i removed the stock PAF-type PUs for the reason I bought this guitar, since i had some Ibanez 90's Infinity-Pickups left which I wanted to use. I like their sound a lot, at least when it comes to regular tuned guitars. However it turned out that my decision was done with haste since they have a quite dark tonal characteristic and loads of output, DC-resistance is about 16,6KOhm @bridge.
So, I ended up with a guitar that with its heavy strings and Pickups in the end lacks of definition and tone on every amp i tested it with. So the problem is that, in the end, i`ve got far *too much* boom out of the guitar.
So i'm considering if it would be better to refit my SG with the PAF-types again, since they sound well at least in usual tuning and should feel more "open ended", since they are a lot weaker than those INFs. But i'm unsure, since the guitar itself should stay downtuned and being used for metal only, and usually i prefer the more output pickups and therefore less Amp-Gain-tone than vice versa for that.
I only found one similar thread using the searchengine, but that one didn`t really give me what i am looking for.
So my question is what PUs you would recommend for such Setups (heavy strings, 24,75" neck etc.) to keep the tone clean and tight? Should it be PAF-types, or probably actives? Which ones do you use?
Thank you.
