Which version of the Custom for my new guitar?

Guitar is a late 80s early 90s Charvel Fusion Plus. Ash body, rosewood board, bolt maple neck, dual HB, Schaller Floyd, Dinky style Strat body, short 24.75" "Gibson" scale length. I have narrowed it down to one of the various Custom versions; e.g., Ceramic Custom, A5 Custom 5 or A2 Custom Custom? Which mags will work best with those particular specs and wood combos?

What type of music do you play and how is your amp tonally?

Also, how does it sound now, and how do you want it to change?

This guitar would be for eighties heavier rock; e.g., EVH to Hair Metal. I got it used and the original Jackson pups were swapped out for active Reflex Silver pups. They are extremely compressed and very dynamic. Lots of boomy bottom end that is hard to dial out from the guitar because it has an active tone control with a flat detent. Turning up the tone control past the detent only seems to add a piercing shrill treble tone. My amps are Randall MTS with the removable tone modules. I usually use a Fenderish clean module with a crunchy Marshall style module. Sometimes I will also use a 5150 type module or one with Recto sound.

The original Custom is what your looking for. It's the first pickup I always recommend for a guitar centered around EVH and hair metal. You can grab one a simple change in magnets can take it to any of the two other options you listed and more.

I’m no expert but I also agree with the recommendation of the original Custom humbucker

I was thinking regular Custom too, but was wondering if the ceramic magnets plus ash body might result in too pronounced of a mid scoop. I have not owned an ash body guitar in over 20 years, but seem to remember it being very dynamic-lots of highs and lows resulting in a somewhat scooped tone. Could have just been that particular guitar though. Custom would be perfect, because I already have one laying around in my parts box.

Well, you can start with the Custom, and for a few bucks, you can buy a few magnets to swap them out. With an A2, you get a Custom Custom, and with an A5, it becomes a Custom 5. It is totally worth the cost of a few magnets and the few minutes it takes to swap.

I've seen people get good EVH- type sounds with the Custom Custom.

That's good for some of later Lee Roth stuff. A 78 (formerly the Evenly Voiced Harmonics) works better for his earlier work.

The Custom that I already have is the regular spaced one. How much difference would I notice between that and a Trembucker version; i.e., is it worth the money to buy a new one that is Trembucker spaced or is the difference minimal?

As long as the strings go over the poles it's fine.

I suppose it would depend on the guitar.

While we are on the subject of 78s, has anyone here tried an A8 in a 78b? I'm eyeing one for an "alternate history" EVH build I'm doing.
