Which way to turn truss rod?

Hey all,

I need to tweak the neck on my Lipe Virtuoso. The strings are buzzing pretty intensely and the high E string frets out at the 19th fret. I know I just need a slight turn on the truss rod, but which direction? I am always fearful of huritng the guitar and being visually impaired, I easily confuse which way o turn the truss rodClock wise or counter clock wise? I am also about to throw on a new set of the Ernie Ball cobalt strings, I've heard good things about them

Re: Which way to turn truss rod?

Lefty loosy, righty tighty - always.

oh, yes, I know that, but which way to give some relief to the neck. I left this guitar in Boston for a month and came back. Action went from slightly a smidgen above the frets to a lot of string buzz on the frets. We had intense heat and humidity. I am looking to bring the neck back to proper angle.

Re: Which way to turn truss rod?

if the strings buzz on the lower frets (1,2,3,4,5..up to 12)

you need to loosen the truss rod. (left)

if your strings buzz after the 12th fret, you need to raise your action.

The reason for this is that the threads used in truss rods are right hand turn.

There for turning to the right (Clockwise) shortens the distance and increases the resultant pressure on the truss rod and then in turn the neck.

Re: Which way to turn truss rod?

Clockwise to straighten an upbow. Counterclockwise to straighten a backbow/increase relief.

Re: Which way to turn truss rod?

Staring DOWN THE NECK from the headstock, turn to the right to tighten, or add a little bow.

Also - A truss adjustment is sometimes able to be done by itelf. But, often you'll need to adjust all three:

Truss, Bridge /string height, intonation. Just saying, for maximum satisfaction, be prepaired to do all three.

Aceman's advice in his first sentence is only correct if your truss rod nut is on the headstock. If your guitar has its nut at the heel things are the opposite since you would be looking toward the head of the guitar

It'll not add bow in the way that most people think of bow (upbow). It will take away upbow, or add backbow if the neck is already straight.
