White amp/cab owners?

Does anyone have any experience with a white tolexed amp? Do they scuff pretty easily? (Like I'm imagining in my head...) You can scuff black and not hardly notice it, but white, man... is it going to look like an old tennis shoe? How about you guys with colors other than black? Orange and red, etc... How do they hold up?

Re: White amp/cab owners?

I LOVE the look of those, but I would have majore issues hitting the stage with those, everytime I see those I think of Richie Blackmore in his Raibow Arena glory, I mean you have to consistantly make people wanna quit playing every night to justify showing up with white tolex stack on stage .... that's just me though ... and yhea I've have pretty good amount of small scratches on my 4X12 from the days of giging and with white tolex this cab would look like a meth whore from a trailer park on jerry springer.

Re: White amp/cab owners?

Just thinking right now... it would be a cab.

Mavashi, is there any color other than black that doesn't make you feel that way? Like an orange half stack or a purple... Do they all make you play your ass off? (I posted a question like this a while ago, the Gear yo gig with and audience perception)

Re: White amp/cab owners?

I had a white Marshall head with a purple Marshall 4 x 12, the head got dirty real quick though the tolex was the same as any other it did seems to show the scuffs. The purple cab looked very cool and didn't show the marks as bad.

Re: White amp/cab owners?

Purple would not work either, that's the color of the Plexi that one of my bigest idles tried to get so many times and couldn't and played on of his best albums on - Wicked Sensation. Orange - no problem :-))) I am very insecure about my playing at times, when I play stuff that's sound good I am busting my own balls because its technically not hard enough, every time I suck its because I play stuff that I cant play yet .... oh boy ....

Re: White amp/cab owners?

I wouldn't care about what other people think about the color of your amp onstage. I think white half stacks look cool as hell. I'm debating selling my two heads and cab to get a Splawn Pro mod half stack in white. And I know I'd get comments if I gigged again as I play a singlecut in white with white buckers. Straight glam. But who cares? Stand out from the crowd. Don't be worried what other people think if you like it. Getting dirty easily is a concern of mine though. Maybe you could treat the tolex with something? Scotchguard? Who knows...

Re: White amp/cab owners?

That really is my biggest concern, durability and long term appearance. The stage factor is prett small actually. ... and it does concern Splawn. ;)

I thought thats where this might be going!

I think the white looks great but I'm partial to orange. I may buy the cabs from Splawn in orange and an orange headshell for the QuickRod I have.

Re: White amp/cab owners?

my splawn 4x12 has its fair share of marks/scuffs, but most of them i can clean off with some water and a towel. I don't mind the apperance as its always getting loaded in and out of my bass players truck, it has a 'reliced look' thats so in vouge these days. No one ever notices the marks or scuffs anyways, all i usually get it 'Whoa where'd you get that white cab...it looks awesome'

Re: White amp/cab owners?

Eventually I'll be getting a matching cab for this (crappy pic):

I just haven't placed the order yet, and I'll need to keep my Marshall cab while I wait for it.

The tolex cleans off easily with a little water (or sweat from a beer can, how I usually clean it off ;-)

I've carried it to a couple gigs and knocked it around a little and it looks as good as the day I got it.

Re: White amp/cab owners?

Sweet, I've been convinced. :)

How do you guys feel about a Bullseye front panel on the Promod shell? Cool? Cheesy? I want something more unique than the regular chicken wire type that's standard, and I'm not big on the rising sun nor the flames. The flame maple looks cool but I'm not sure I want to know how much that costs! lol

Re: White amp/cab owners?

I'll tell you all the secret of cleaning tolex/levant.

I learned this while detailing vintage upholstery in a carpet cleaning/auto detailing business.

You use Murphy's Oil Soap (available at all grocery stores) mixed with warm water and a sponge. There's something about Murphy's Oil Soap that gets in all the microscopic crevices, removing all grime. It'll make it look like new, while all other cleaning products don't.

Re: White amp/cab owners?

Great tip! Murphy's Oil was the classic soap around my parent's house for all the antique furniture and floors. I'll keep that in mind.

Re: White amp/cab owners?

Well ..... Laney has 20th aniversary AOR from like 5 years ago that was realeased in white tolex ..... maybe this help me get over my complex ......

Re: White amp/cab owners?

Bright white and vintage white (cream). I went for bright white. Actually the thing that pushed me toward it was the article on the new EVH amp, I think it looks great in white. Same with the new Hiwatts in red and white. Splawn is cool enough to offer something like 8 or 9 colors, 3 piping colors and 3 cloth colors, all for the same price. (Mesa, etc. is an upcharge)

Re: White amp/cab owners?

PFDarkside,
