Personally i think the tonal effect of a normal amount of finish on an electric guitar is negligible. On an acoustic it'll make a world of difference what kind of finish is used, but not color.

One thing... when i say "normal" I don't mean "the amount of finish on those 70's Fenders where the bodies and necks are COCOONED in polyester."

No joke, I'm just ill-informed. Heard it somewhere and decided to ask the experts here.

What I heard was something along the lines of "you need a lot more coats with white and hence suffocates the tone" or something like that.

The pigments added to the actual paint are FINALLY one thing that does NOT affect tone. At least not more than any other color would

On an acoustic guitar, a thicker vs. thinner finish would affect the tone of the guitar.

In theory, a thicker vs. thinner finish would also affect the tone of an electric guitar, but not nearly to the degree as it would in an acoustic instrument.

There might be some truth to the white finish being a little thicker...but I don't think it would really affect the tone of an electric guitar.

Not enough that I could hear a difference anyway.

Hello Hello--
It has more to do with what KIND of finish [ and, how thick it is.] Good, thinly applied lacquer will affect the tone much less then a body dipped in poly. A metal flake or metallic [even with a lacquer base] will put METAL onto the wood of the guitar....no rocket science there!

That's why Michael Shenker plays that 1/2 black and 1/2 white flying V. The black offsets the negative effects of the white paint, and the guitar's tone is neutralized.
