Who builds a 5 watt Fender Champ Clone?

Re: Who builds a 5 watt Fender Champ Clone?

Champs come up on Ebay quite regularly.
Any reason you are looking for a clone?

You can also find home-brew Champ clones on Ebay at very reasonable prices.

You would need to put it in a combo cab (or head) and sort out a speaker.

Probably not what you are looking for, but the Champ is often built as a first build by hobbyists.

I'm building one at the moment.

You could also consider building one from a kit.

Good luck !!

Good question. I was wondering the same thing. You could get a Silverface Champ and have it modded exactly how you wanted it for cheaper than you could buy a clone.

I thought that a brand new one would be nice, but ScottF said to take my old one to a Tech and have it serviced before I make any final decisions.:smokin:

Re: Who builds a 5 watt Fender Champ Clone?

Can someone like myself, who knows nothing about building amps, build one myself?

Why not? Can you solder in a pickup? If so, you're on your way.

Can you put together a jigsaw puzzle? If so, you're on your way.

Most of the little champ kits are going to be 5F1 tweed stuff. Not the blackface.

Re: Who builds a 5 watt Fender Champ Clone?

hey scott, do you use an oscilliscope to build/troubleshoot amps? ... harder to build one without an O-scope? .. or is a multimeter sufficient?

Re: Who builds a 5 watt Fender Champ Clone?

For what it's worth, in the last issue of Guitarist, Joe Satriani said he's been working with Peavey to develop thier version of a Champ. That's all he said so who knows? Might be interesting.

YES! They are fun to mess with, and a great, low impact amp project for a novice builder.

Re: Who builds a 5 watt Fender Champ Clone?

As asked by T4D, I would also be interested in amp builders commenting on how often they have found it helpful to use an o-scope when building.

I have an o-scope but I'm still getting used to using it and trusting my judgement regarding interpreting what I'm seeing.

Also, I wondered how often builders use variacs ?
(I don't have a variac)

One last question. Do most builders prefer eyelet or turret construction? About equal?

Stratcat...I'm not trying to ambush your post man !!
Hope you try to build an amp sometime and the comments from other builders about these basic questions could be helpful.

Thanks

Dave

I can do both of those quite well, and I think I will try to build a Tweed Champ.
Thanks Scott.

Nope, don't own one. For what I"m doing, I don't really need one. I'm not reinventing the wheel here. Guys like Bruce at Mission build new stuff that has never existed before. I'm sure he uses his all the time.

To the guy that asked about eyelet or turret... it depends on which style amp I'm building. I prefer turret stuff, but use eyelets in the Fenderish stuff. Turret stuff in the Marshall and Matchless clones.

David Allen sells a really cool 5F1 chassis that has a flip down "lid" to gain easier access for tube socket wiring. He sells a kit as well.

Mojo sells a kit.

Not sure if Bruce/Mission sells a champ kit. But if he does, the support is excellent.

Heck, if it was me, I'd probably just build a 5E3. It's not that much more difficult and to my ears, it's a cooler amp.
