Who can tell me what’s going on here?

I have a couple of guitars I want to sell and one of them has what looks like the clearcoat possibly lifting or maybe some moisture was trapped under the clearcoat running along the side of the neck where the fretboard meets the neck? (See last set of pics). The fretboard is not at all lifting and the guitar is 100% playable. Push/pulls for splitting on a set of BKP Rebel Yell pups. Frets look like they have a lot of life left but probably could use a level and polish and a general going over. Yes, I know the fretboard looks gross. LOL
I’ve owned this guitar for 10+ years and it was like this when I got it. It was my #1 for about 6 of those years.
I just don’t want to misrepresent the condition.
I’m open to guesstimates as to what it might’ve worth too. The only ones on eBay are in Japan and are 1K(ish) + shipping and who knows what CITES fees are?

It does knda look like the laquer is peeling or something but otherwise a beautiful guitar! You might consider cleaning the fretboard real well and treating it with some lemon oil though ;)

Thanks!
There isn’t any chipping of the lacquer but it looks like it has lifted.
But yes, I’ll give it a good spit shine this weekend!!

Lacquer lifting off the ebony. This is more common than you think.

You can score along the bottom edge of the fretboard with a sharp razor and remove the lacquer if you like.

Yep I’ve seen a few guitars over the years with the same thing, even some real high PRS.

I'm not generally interested in LP style guitars. Or yellow/gold color in guitars for that matter.

But that looks really nice. I mean really, if I'd stumble that on a sale for good price I'd probably buy it.

Great looking guitar!

I think that’s exactly what I’ll do.
Would you recommend just leaving it alone after that or should I reapply a sealer?
If so what should I use?

Thanks! This is a discontinued color that was only used from, I’m guessing 2002-2006 called “Copper Top”. This guitar is a 2006 model. Although it’s not “rare” it’s certainly uncommon.

I think you should keep that guitar. :D

When you score the lacquer it will give the stress somewhere to go. Unless you already have separation beyond the ebony, you shouldn't have to do anything else except buffing out any harsh edges.

Here’s the deal with the guitar.
I haven’t played it in....forever. I have a Standard that I LOVE. Plus I also have a LP Special that I like more too.
The neck on this guitar is a ‘59 roundback and I prefer the 60’s slim taper on my Standard.
Plus I’m raising funds for another purchase...
Make me an offer....[emoji4]

@Ayrton....I’m going to attempt to fix this myself (with some help from my father....he’s much more knowledgeable in these things).
Can you recommend a good spray lacquer I can use that will match what Gibson uses?
Thanks!!

The frets on that guitar look like levelled, but not crowned.

Whoa, time out!

When you say "fix" what do you mean exactly? You should not need to spray anything. Just score a break line with a new X-Acto blade and then remove the flaking lacquer from the side of the fretboard.

I did do that on the treble side of the board. The lacquer basically chipped off unevenly and when I removed what I could there was what I can only describe as “pitting” in the ebony on the side of the board. I figured that Gibson probably “hid” that with lacquer. (?)

By “fix” I meant that I was going to reapply the lacquer that I am chipping off. Tape off the guitar and either spray or brush it back on.

In an earlier post, you said after scoring the lacquer and removing the pieces from the side of the board I should buff the edges. I understand what you mean by buff the edges...basically feather the edges so the are smooth...but what should I be using for that?

Re: Who can tell me what’s going on here?

Re: Who can tell me what’s going on here?

Looking at that kinda stuff it looks like you could drop fill lacquer into those pits and sand that flat for sure just spray clear nitro onto a toothpick and let a drop fall into the spot and let it dry, keep going until it's higher than the surrounding area then when it's really dry you wet sand it progressively smoother and buff with a polishing compound at the end
So reranch sells nitro clear coat
And Behlens Instrument Lacquer is on Amazon, etc
Lows and home Depot have Deft clear lacquer which is nitro but in my experience that stuff is kinda soft/dries slooooow
But that way you won't have to spray the neck itself

Re: Who can tell me what’s going on here?

That's what I would do is tape off the area and spray new clear lacquer. As for the pitting is it pretty minor or what? Small amounts of a clear nitro based sanding sealer, could be spot applied and sanded smooth and if you're careful it could blend in perfectly if it's deep pits I'm not sure at that point, bondo is a suggestion I read somewhere

But yeah I would tape newspaper around the guitar to mask, spray a really light first couple coats and then several wet coats and after it dries over a month you can wet sand and buff with finishing compound and it should blend right in

I’ll try to post some pics of the pitting tomorrow. It’s going to need some fretwork too...as mentioned earlier they aren’t crowned anymore. I must have worn them down from several years of playing it. Plus I found 2 dented frets the other night. Looks like the G String was bumped pretty hard at some point and dented the frets.
If I want to get decent money for it, it’s gonna need a little work.
