Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

For the bridge pickup sound I have to go with Sykes. That tone he gets from his Dirty Fingers is just so cool! Doug's bridge sound (on "good to be bad") is nice and ballsy, but there is a "fuzzy-ness" to it that I just dont like. Now for neck pup solo tones it's a different story! I'd go with Doug's neck pup tone any-day over Sykes's. Some of the solos he gets from that John Suhr neck pickup are just so liquid like. Over all, I go with Sykes's tone

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Honestly, I have never heard anything with Doug Aldrich that impressed me.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

... Sykes. Nothing against him personally, but I can't stand Doug Aldrich's lanky vibrato. Plus "Still of the Night" has some of the most kick-*A* Hair Metal riffs I ever heard in one song.. Sykes must've channeled Iommi for that tune. :headbang:

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

One of my favorite distortion tones is Sykes' on "Whitesnake".

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

In order to form an opinion, I would have to actually listen to a Whitesnake album.

Sorry...

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

i'm going to go back and listen: i'll vote later when i can make an informed choice.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

They are both great. Sykes is Sykes but ALdrich is probably one of my favorite players. I love his tone and technique and his tone on the new Whitensake album is fantastic.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

This is a very tough question. I absolutely dig Aldrich's playing, be it with WS, Burning Rain, Lion or his solo stuff. I think Doug sounds great on the last WS studio disc as well as the live recordings. Heck, I'll listen to about anything that he plays on and his tones are killer.

But I had to vote for Sykes because without him, I think WS would have been a largely unknown band in the US and a number of other countries. His playing, tone and songwriting on "1987" stand out as one of the landmarks from that era. That "1987" disc is simply historic and genre-defining on so many levels and if someone were to ask me to point to classic examples of "'80's guitars tones", Sykes' sound on that album would be right up there with Lynch and DeMartini.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Aldrich sounds and plays alot better on the Burning Rain albums and Sykes takes it up a notch on the Blue Murder albums he did after Whitesnake.......but hey both are awesome players!

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Tone: Sykes on 1987, the best high gain LP tone ever, although I dig early Doug Aldrich's tone (80s era only, not crazy about the recorded tone on Good to be Bad).

Lead style: Doug Aldrich all the way

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

I saw Whitesnake with Judas Priest at the begining of this month at the California Mid State Fair and Doug has a KILLER live tone! No he doesnt play as clean as he does on the album (solo wise), but he wasnt super sloppy. Now Sykes on the other hand......ive seen live footage of him and he is so accurate with his playing it is scary.

I've always like Aldrich's sound dating as far back as his albums with the band Lion. I know you said studio sound, but it's tough to ignore Aldrich's live sound with Whitesnake. I'd love to see those guys in concert, as their live DVD released a couple years ago is probably my most watched music DVD.

Re: Who do you like better? Sykes or Aldrich?

Well, Ive not heard any studio recording that Aldrich has done, and all my fav snake songs were done by Sykes I think.. (did sykes cut Here I go again?) Anyhow, Slow and easy , love and no stranger, here I go again and the songs off that record are my fav snake stuff.
