Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

I'm going to get a set of PhatCats, who has the best price on'em?

I'm putting these in a PRS McCarty are they shallow enough or do you have to special order them that way? Thanks

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

I believe they're $77. Lew and Black Rose both have them for that price I believe. They're both members here. I'll see if I can find you some links.

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

Thanks Jolly! Yes, John and I both tend to sell Duncans for the same price...about 30% off retail. Lew

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

when I ordered mine, I was told that I needed to get a "short legged" version. I have mine in a Mccarty as well.

Love them. But it will take you a few weeks longer to get them. Either of the guys above can help you.

I put mine in my Braz. Limited Ed. and that axe has the brushed nickel finish on it. So, I had the Duncan custom shop put some brushed covers on mine. Looks great, looks fairly stock even though the pole pieces are in the middle and not on one side. Most people never even notice it.

If you really want to go all out, order them through the custom shop and ask for the Scott_F windings. When you get them, they will be exactly the same as teh P90s they wind for PRS to put into the soapbar pups. MJ will take care of you, but it's likely to cost a bit more.

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

Can someone please tell me... is a phatcat (or any P90 sound) better in the neck or bridge position? Or both?

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

Stefan, it's just a different tone when it's all said and done.

Think single coil strat, but bigger, fuller, more upper mids, etc. Single coil on steroids is my favorite description. I do not think that either neck or bridge are necessarily better than the other. Just kinda depends on what you like to play. I like them both.

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

I realise I didn't phrase it very eloquently. Try this: if you were going to have one on your guitar (and saw, one humbucker,) where would you put it?

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

If I were going to mix a P90 with a humbucker on a two pickup guitar I would use a bridge humbucker and neck P90. I prefer single coils for neck pickups anyway...brighter, clearer and less woofy. Lew

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

It was just a thought; it's either that or 2 humbuckers for my next guitar (unless toy have any better ideas!) I'm not sure 2x P90s would be versatile for me, I like switches and things :)

I've gotten some awesome tones out my Jazz neck / Custom P-90 Bridge strat.. flip it to the middle position for cleans, bridge for distortion. I'm thinking about tossing a Phat Cat or a different humbucker in the neck position to kind of open up the overdrive sound, though (both pups in overdrive sounds kind of flabby).

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

The Phat Cat is a great choice for the neck position. I haven't heard too much of the Phat Cat bridge pickup, but I would expect some real bite to go with that fatness. If you still want a humbucker in the mix, then put one in the bridge with the Phat Cat at the neck. I love the Phat Cat neck pup I put in my Tele -- matches well with the JD Tele lead pup, so I guess a moderate output bridge HB would be a match for it.

Re: Who has best SD PhatCat prices?

One more thing. I don't think going with the lowest prices is the best thing to do afterall it is internet. You should go with the most reliable and best serving dealer. And in that case, I did not even hear once a bad comment about Lew and John, ever.

My personal experience with them has been nothing but perfectly satisfying, not only regarding the purchase, but also being friendly and all. We are very lucky to have both of them here on board!

Yeah, that's a great combo. I have a Tele with a P90 Hot neck and a 8.6K Broadcaster bridge. Good for clearing the sinuses :burnout:

Scott that is a nice Mac you got! Still not as "limited edition" as my McTrem though :)

I'm hoping the production pups will sounds as good in this Mac as the PhatCats did in the Newport I used to have. I liked them a lot more than the McCarty Soapbar pickups. They are just a little too thick for me.

Thanks for all the replies folks!

They do sound different (production versus what I had wound). The production versions and what was in that hamer were Alinco 2. Mine are exactly like the PRS versions, A5 Vintage neck in the neck (rwrp) and a ceramic Custom neck in the bridge. Very cool to me.
