Who Has The Best Artist Signature Strat?

Re: Who Has The Best Artist Signature Strat?

I dislike "Best" threads, as they are like "hottest" woman questions. I mean like, who's to say? It depends on what your preferences are, and how and what you play. I've owned a few, and my early production Custom Shop Robert Cray is incredible. The pickups are killer, the neck is thick, and the craftsmanship is flawless. Great guitar, but some folks dislike hard tails, and prefer a trem. One post already mentions the Sambora model with the Floyd Rose, which would be a red flag for me. I just wouldn't want a locking trem guitar. I currently am gassing for a Eric Johnson solid body with a rosewood bound neck. I've always wanted a Danny Gatton Tele, which are friggen awesome as well. I should have bought one back in the day when you actually saw them used for a decent price, those days are long gone. So I guess my vote goes to my Robert Cray, but honorable mentions for Gatton, Johnson, and my SRV is pretty good too. Another big neck, and I love the tall frets.

I almost forgot the Albert Collins Tele with a SD 59 in the neck position. Again, not one that you tend to come across for sale very often, and certainly one that you could build yourself, but pretty cool none the less.

Another vote for Eric Johnson strat. I generally dislike artist signatures, but that's one of the Fender's best offerings as it is.

Re: Who Has The Best Artist Signature Strat?

Different strats have features that appeal to different players. I have owned countless strats and by far the best quality strat outside of the nicer custom shop models is the Eric Johnson model. The particular features may not be for you, but you won’t find a strat made with better quality parts. Every part of the guitar is exclusive to the EJ model and the fact that you can pick them up new for well under $2k is a steal.

Rory Gallagher, just because he's awesome.

That reminds me of the pool I had my first job at. The paint was so cheap that we would repaint the tables every year, but by the end they would be looking like that.

Who Has The Best Artist Signature Strat?

Growing up I was a huge Clapton fan so that was obviously on the dream list but then I went to a store that had Yngwie's and loved the 70s headstock and scalloped fingerboard:

Always liked the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Model for its features - 12” Radius & Jumbo Frets in particular.

Now I wonder what Rory Gallagher's pool looked like.

I played a 1992 SRV strat a week back. Really excellent. Amazing neck. 12 inch fretboard. Great pickups. Sustain for ages and a real "old guitar" feel and that loose 1960s kind of vibe. Only thing i would change is the pickguard. Gassing bad.

Tom Delonge Strat.

Re: Who Has The Best Artist Signature Strat?

My buddy has an Eric Johnson Strat. It's the original with the sunburst finish and maple fingerboard. It's a sweet, sweet sounding guitar. We played it through his Princeton and a YJM 100w Marshall. It sits very comfortably and the neck is chunky but comfy. I sort of wish I bought one instead of the Dave Murray Strat.

The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't adjust the trussrod without taking the neck off.

Re: Who Has The Best Artist Signature Strat?

I do like the new EJ Strat, that is semi hollow. I haven't played one yet, but I wonder how the balance is, and how it compares to the old one.

John Mayer.

:wall:

Serious, if you like the Vintage/Modern Strat thing (vintage tone with modern upgrades like flatter radius, bigger frets, satin neck finish, calibrated pickups that are more vintage than Texas Specials, modern electronic upgrades like 5-way, .022uF and bridge tone control) then it’s great. Also, the signature is small and on the back, it just looks like a 62RI Strat.

Also, it’s not worth the inflated prices it’s going for now, but was more than worth the price when it was in production.

Same here. I really like the Mayer Strat for those reasons.

Re: Who Has The Best Artist Signature Strat?

I liked the SRV, the Knopfler, the Shepherd, the Johnson and the Mayer Strats...but all-in-all, I would not choose any one of them over my G&L Legacy, S-500 and Comanche models

The best vibrato, upgraded tuners, and usable tone controls. Tons of color options, tons of neck options, body woods, fretboards, binding, etc.

These guitars retain the vintage feel of my old 1960 Strat, but they have the "right" upgrades to modern features that correct many of the things in the original design that drive Strat players down the road of constant modifications.

It won't have my name on it, but my "signature" Strat is a G&L Legacy.

Bill
