Who here plays a 7 string guitar in addition to 6 string ones?

Howdy. A few months ago I moved from playing 4 string bass to 5 string and I was shocked by how easy it was for me to adapt. I find the extra string great not just for the extra range but rather because it makes notes available in other places in the neck.

SO, now I’m thinking that I want to give a 7 string guitar a shot. The difference is that I would still go back and forth between this guitar and my other normal ones. I wonder if any folks here do that regularly without issues.

In terms of guitar I’m thinking of buying a le cheapo Ibanez Gio 7 string or similar first but I’m considering going straight to a model I would enjoy.

I do.

I've got two I identical black Indo Ibanez S7420 Sabre's. The first I've had for at least 10 years. Picked the second one up used but minty a few weeks ago when I saw it listed cheap in the local newspaper classifieds :bigthumb:

Easily. After all, it just one extra string lower. And the bottom two strings are turned to the same interval as the top two strings: A and D.

I do go between 6 and 7s, and have always found it to be trickier to go from 6 to 7 than the other way around.

My hands take a minute to adjust to the extra string and proper muting technique, but after a short time it's a-ok. But they lock right in when I lose a string!

Sounds like I shouldn’t be concerned. The muting piece worries me a bit but I hope to figure it out.

I’m going to sell my tele to get one so I hope it works :)

Did you have a model in mind? Not sure what your preferences are but you could score a good used one,

My first one was a Schecter A7 I got from a forum bro and it served me well for years. The omens seem like a great deal and I like how their necks are substantial, something you can really get in your hand

I’m not a metal player which I’ve noticed restricts a bit my choices. Live I play CCM only these days. Grew up playing fusion and classic rock for fun.

I rarely buy new so here for sure I would buy used.

In a strange turn of events my favorite guitar to play now is a Strandberg Boden (I bought it to have something small as I was driving around the US) so I’ve been eyeing the seven string versions. It’s not a guitar for everyone so there seems to be good deals on them used.

I’ve also been looking at Ibanez, the PRS SE 7 and the Legator Opus OTF7 for something different.

I hadn’t looked at Schecter but the Omens do looks great.

In general I would appreciate pickups that are not super hot and can still be dynamic and have nice cleans. Of course, I could swap them for some Duncans :)

I do. 2/3rds of my band’s songs are in standard. The remainder is split between 7 string and 6 down one step. I’ve gotten pretty used to the back and forth with no issues and can sometimes just do all the 6 standard and 7 string songs on the one 7 string guitar to reduce the number of guitars, unless I need a particular 6 for the feel for leads.

The Schecter 007 Elite was very user friendly for my first 7 string and it has a single coil neck. Very nice cutaway. Quite exotic and I don’t think they make them anymore. Had an aftermarket 7 string single from a now defunct local manufacturer and a Lundgren M7 in the bridge which is super brutal and can handle anything.

I didn’t know about that one. Nice. I really like the SH configuration, too bad there doesn’t seem to be too many 22 fret tees.
