I think 9`s are for beginners ! Yes it`s true
Anyone who says 9 feels better just got some weak hands and need to practrice some more,play your axe for a while and you`ll soon climb the ladder.

I use 9's on the majority of my Les Pauls. I also use 10's and 11's. I'm not real particular about strings.

Thick strings don't equal good tone. They equal better tone. If someone has amazing tones with a set of 9's, just imagine how much better their tone could be if they use 11's.

I use 9-46 for "E" tuning, and 10-52 for "D". No big deal.

11-48 is my favorite- I definitely notice an improvement in tone over 10's. However, when you go much heavier than that it seems the improvement diminishes and isn't worth the added playing difficulty.

Also, I could very well be wrong, but I think that 11's and 12's are only considered light or medium when used on acoustics.

Yeah. I use 13's on acoustics and they don't feel heavy to me.

9-46 gives me the best balance of thick tone on the bottom and SRV bendiness on top. I bend every third note, so I don't like 10's as much for that. And I've never heard a difference between the two.

I also have mostly used a hybrid 46 to 09 on LPs, but recently have liked straight 10s quite a bit. It takes my wimpy fingers a little getting used to after tossing around the nines for awhile, but sounds pretty good.

I'd have to uptune if I used .009 on a 24.75 scale. That's very light! On short scales I have a tendency to use an 11 set (DR Tite Fit 11)... maybe a 10 set if there aren't any 11s laying around. 10s on 25.5 scale unless I'll be down tuning, in which case I use 11s or 12s depending on how far down I go, but I've never had any use for anything lower than C# standard.

FTR - heavier guage strings = different tone, not necessarily better.

I wouldn't say that, i would say big strings = bigger, thicker tone though, which is what i like for my guitars.

I can't get on with the wound strings in a 9-42 set on a Les Paul - just too splatty! After a few years of playing 9-46 on my Les Pauls I recently changed back to 10-46. It didn't take me long to adjust to the heavier plain strings, and since changing I have noticed better tuning stability on the 2nd & 3rd strings, plus I haven't broken a 2nd string - I used to go through quite a few 11s!

9's non a Les Paul are too slinky for me, I used 10's. Though when I do go to 9's tapping and shredding is alot easier

i started using 11's and 10's, then as i got better i used 9's. I think 9's do well on a lp. I play a strat now and i now use hybrid slinky's. they have a thicker bottom and lighter top.

It also makes a difference to what kind of music you play. For blues and Blues rock stuff i'd say lighter strings, just so you can move bends easier.

Is it much different from larger gauge strings?

I use 9's and they can be different depending on some things such as, if you do a lot of bending it can be better to have 9's verses higher gauge strings. I use 9's because for me they just seem to feel better. It's one of those things that just a personal fit. I use 10's also but I like the way the 9's bend. Many famous guitarists use 9's or even 8's. Billy Gibbons, Brian May, Frank Zappa((RIP), Angus Young...ect.

I currently play 9s on a epiphone Les Paul. Started with 10s then went up a gauge to 11s. With 9s I can play faster and more confidently, and it makes my guitar easier to play. Not to mention less hand fatique.

11s sounded "fuller" and acoustically different. Not sure if better is the word I would use, atleast through my rig. It's a personal preference thing, but I decided that compromising playability wasn't worth the benefits of bigger strings.

I use .009 on my Les Paul and other guitars. I don't think it is a finger strength issue I play my acoustic instruments fine with much heavier strings. They are just what I have always used, they work no reason to change. Tone? There are bigger parameters to your tone than the diameter of a string.
