who here's using 8's?

Re: who here's using 8's?

I've never messed with em but always wanted to try a set out. Doesn't Yngwie use 8's?

Yngwie uses 8 to 48's. I've tried out one of his sig Fenders, and they claim that they're the same gauge he uses. I didn't care for the thinness. 11
s are my min. With 11's you can still bend like crazy, and still have a good thick tone. 8's seem like overkill, but then again, I'd assume that with 8's, it's easier to two hand tap. I know Billy Gibbons has a set of 7's out, and even if I hate them, it's still something that has to be tried at least once by me.

Everyone always says Yngwie uses 8's, but no one seems to remember that it's only 8 on the top end. His gauge is 8-48, and with high action to boot. Says that he likes the heavy bottom strings for really chugging away on the rhythm riffs.

Re: who here's using 8's?

I could see putting 8s on a guitar with humbuckers, but not one with single coils.

Re: who here's using 8's?

Yeah - girly men like EVH, Page, Gibbons (7s - what a pu$$y!), Iommi, May...

:lmao:

Tony Iommi plays 8s cause 2 of his fretting fingers are truncated. He even tunes down to B flat sometimes. EVH is a thing of the past. His style is outdated and he is struggling to make a come back and has to withdraw miserably.

Re: who here's using 8's?

I like to run 8's on my longer scale guitars, and 9's on my shorter scales (like les pauls).

I can play with a light touch, so it doesn't matter. I feel that playing guitar has a lot to do with finesse. It really shouldn't matter if the strings are as sloppy as the hoe down the street or as stiff as piano wire.

As a side note, I run 13's on my acoustics, and I play them the same way as I do electrics (leads and such).

I bet 8s sound sucky, lacking in power and heaviness.

False.

Re: who here's using 8's?

I exclusively use 8s and downtune to c# like Iommi for years, and I recorded my 50+ songs that way.

you get a little fret buzz but I do not think it is noticeable if you use distortion and know how to press on the fretboard close to the fret with 8s. I do think Iommi's guitars are specially made for this however.

Re: who here's using 8's?

Guys who think you NEED big strings are overcompensating.

Depending on your style and the sound you are looking for large strings may not be the way to go.

lol I would have liked to have read that deleted msg.

Personally, can't play strings that light - I've tried and my ham-fisted style just won't allow it. I've watched guys who have a lighter touch make them sound as big as any .11 set though.

Once the guitar is plugged in I defy anybody to be able to tell the difference.

Re: who here's using 8's?

Agree. Even 9s is too. I found 9s and below are too thin and soft on the tips of my fingers, like playing a toy guitar. I have been with 11s for the last 5 years.

I bet 8s sound sucky, lacking in power and heaviness.

Take that bet against Iommi and you'll be paying up!
