who invented heavy metal

Re: who invented heavy metal

The Who didn't invent Heavy Metal either...

You are giving the Who WAY WAY too much credit tonight.....

Re: who invented heavy metal

Link Wry started the broken speaker distortion with the song rumble
But I believe heavy metal was more what zeppelin was doing
Or at least that when the phrase came about

Re: who invented heavy metal

The first band I ever heard the term heavy metal applied to was BLUE CHEER. They were around before Sabbath.

Re: who invented heavy metal

IIRC, the first band to use the term "heavy metal" in a song was Steppenwolf (Born To Be Wild) in 1968.

Re: who invented heavy metal

You know a lot of people don’t know this but it was actually invited by Nikolai Tesla & then subsequently stolen by the CIA upon his death....

Personally I think he was channeling aliens & the ghost of Gorge Washington at the time he did this but nobody knows for sure & it’s a topic of great debate. Mostly because it’s also possible that he could have been talking to the devil & channeling the ghost of Marry Queen Of Scott’s instead???

Re: who invented heavy metal

I've always figured it was mostly Led Zeppelin. The Immigrant Song, Kashmir, Heartbreaker, When the Levee Breaks, Black Dog, Communications Breakdown . . . these all kinda paved the way for metal to come. Dark sounding, intricate guitar playing, heavy riffing.

Yes - but the term refers to the car of interest in the song. American "Heavy Metal" is a name for a type/style of vehicle. It had no reference to the sound of the music.

The lyrics are not specific...but it is generally accepted that "heavy metal thunder" is referring to the sound of an American motorcycle. Mars Bonfire has stated that he was inspired to write the song by a motorcycle poster that he saw that said "Born To Ride" on it.

Steppenwolf was not a heavy metal band, though they certainly had some proto-metal elements. As you said, the lyrics do not refer to music in any way. They're talking about Harleys, basically.

Re: who invented heavy metal

You are joking, I take it. Who the hell has not heard Blue Cheer?

Quit being such an uppity fck and maybe use your enormous brain to think of another interpretation for my post. Which songs specifically do you think are metal? Cuz it sounds pre proto metal to me.

Re: who invented heavy metal

I know who Blue Cheer is, and I know they covered "Summertime Blues."

I'm turning 40 in a few months, and I only know who they are because when I was growing up, my dad used them as a benchmark for bands that played too loud or "used too much distortion" to crap on whatever I was listening to.
