Who Knows Pots Inside & Out?

I was hoping to mess with some pots I have here at home and hopefully someone can coach me a little from their experience.

1) I want to take my 500k Long Shaft pots and make them 1 Meg by removing the wafer and replacing it. Seems like it should work and Torres makes their 1 Meg long shafts in-house. I suspect this is all they do, and then charge $14 each.

2) I want to modify a TBX pot to change the resistance of the 250k side. It's the same idea as above but I have a use for the center-detent and 1 Meg top part. I seem to recall reading that you can increase the resistance by removing some of the carbon trace?

Thanks for the help. I'm familiar with no-load pots and there are tutorials online how to make them, but that's not what I need this time.

Re: Who Knows Pots Inside & Out?

have you found a source for the resistive wafer?

Changing the wafer in a pot is not that easy. The way the wiper is held to the shaft doesn't allow for easy removal, and is VERY unfriendly to reinstallation of the wiper assembly. You may be able to pull it off, but it won't be easy. It seems pretty hard to find a 1 meg long shaft pot...

http://www.allparts.com/store/1-meg-linear-pot,Product.asp That one says it's a 3/4" long, would that be long enough?
