Who likes graphic finishes?

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

Oh, alright.

This one gets me everytime... droooooool....

Being an 80s metal fanboi, I love the graphic guitars. And Kramers

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

Used to be my thing to die for, but not anymore; especially cause I get bored with it sooner or later, it is not timeless.

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

I like graphics but not most of what I see around. I like the one off ones like Erik's Kramer, and stuff what Kramersteen has done. A good friend of mine a great artist has asked me to let him paint my guitar with some custom graphics. I want to get that done, but just not with any of the guitars I have now.

Most graphic finishes are done with airbrush. There are exceptions but that's how they are done.

I think you would be amazed at how many are actually a type of printed sticker... Most of the Jacksons that you see with like the lightning sky or pile of skulls that they do on the USA production models are stickers of this type... Found this out when the tip of my lightning sky RR1 had a severe collusion with a stingray bass during a rather energetic solo.

That's interesting. Must be further evolution from the photo flame finishes that started in the 90's. I know my Baretta was painted by Dennis Kline. He still paints guitars today. Has a room full of 'em in progress right now.

You can usually tell the sticker stuff cause its only on the top and never wraps to the sides at all my DK2 is this way

I have a warlock that is hand airbrushed... its easy to tell... the guy used his fingerprints to add texture to the rocks... in the echelon of airbrushing its a meh job... but its so cheesy that its freaking cool.

Yeah, easy to tell on the Dinky. The Epi Zakk Wylde Bullseye is a sticker too, which I've known. I've seen so many guys airbrushing finishes I never thought that there would be some done with a sticker. Saves money for the manufacturer, I guess.

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

I would consider my stuff more like a veneer. Using paper like stickers is the cheapest easiest way of doing things, They do the same with skateboards and other finishes of that style. Like someone mentioned though with a hit or something the edges can start to lift and then eventually peal off. This is why i use fabric cotton as it becomes harder than wood when its glued and sealed on. It also makes for a more natural looking finish as the materials natural weave remains under the gloss/sealer. I love airbrush art and i an do some but i prefer my current methods as it makes for a more natural looking graphic.

Another bonus of using fabric is that you can run off the sides. Its not an easy task to do but it can be done.

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

The MIJ "Japanese paisleys" use fabric. It's satisfying to see light play off both the shiny finish as well as the threads of the fabric underneath.

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

^^ oh yeah thats what i am talking about. It hard to describe but once you're looking at it you instantly realize.

I have been meaning to do a paisley for some time now. I even considered doing a few to sell on da bay.

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

I used to not like them. But now I do.
But I preffer when its some kind of artwork that is not trying to show real people. These look a bit weird in my opinion.
And I wish I knew abut your method of using fabric before! Looks much better that what I have been doing in my project.

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

I have done a few now.....

I'll say. Amazing work! Are those pieces you've done for others? If so, how does that work? Do they give you a "I was thinking of a..." and you take it from there or?

While not a graphic finish, I've always had a sift spot fir those '80s crackle finishes.

Some are for others but most are mine i only do them for fun not as a business or anything.. Yeah i provide mock ups based on their ideas using Photoshop and then they decide which to go for.

I want to try a crackle finish myself. All they do is spray a base colour down, Follow that with a entire misting of glue, then they paint another colour over the glue. .As it dries the paint breaks apart on the glue layer making the finish.

Some graphics is cool, but some get really busy. This is my Strat named Taboo. Two of my best friends put this together for me for my birthday a few years ago. My oldest and best friend did the graphics, which is pin striped and Whit gold leaf as well as variegated leaf. My other close friend (Cris Mirabella) assembled it for me and gave it to me for my birthday!! Very cool guitar and it looks great and plays great!

Re: Who likes graphic finishes?

I think if the design or theme has already proved to be timeless or classic, like paisley, it will remain timeless or classic, but if it's a contemporary design then, yes, in twenty years from now, people might say it looks like a design from twenty years ago. I like the Strat with the VW motif because the Strat itself is old, the VW is old, both date back to the 50's, so it just works, and it will always work. The air brush art seems a bit more like a regretful full body tattoo though, especially if it's of a woman with outdated makeup and hair.
