Who made who ?

That's interesting.
I kinda suspected something like that going on with the parts I buy. For example: I use a lot of Schaller Roller Bridges in my guitars, but occasionally I get one where the machining of the rollers and/or the threaded shafts is not done very well and the roller saddles don't move freely. Perhaps I got one or two outsourced bridges? The rest of them work perfectly smooth. I've occasionally seen the same thing with the tuners I use (Fender locking 18:1).

As much as I've had a lot of Schaller hardware, and will probably not stop buying it, I think it's kind of overrated as far as quality goes.

I've had the finish flake off in a couple of tailpieces I've had, and the tuners I had were super hearvy and marred and scratched super easily just by tightening the nuts on to the headstock and changing the strings.

They use Zinc in a lot of stuff as well. Not that that's bad, but similarly priced stuff is using aluminum, steel, or other higher-priced "better" alloys.

I guess Schaller kinda has a problem sorta like ENGLs where we in America (I mean the continent) get screwed over by import taxes and conversion rates, and we get charged premium prices. But much like ENGL, it's not really top-quality stuff in Germany. Just decently made stuff in a country where labor is really expensive. But that is just my assumption.

Or maybe they're charging us for the design rather than the manufacturing quality. Because the design is pretty good.

I've never had finish problems like you mentioned. But, like I said, I've had other quality issues. Mind you that in my experience those problems were rare, and I will definitely continue to buy Schaller until something major pops up.
