Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

+1 for those ESP Vintage Series models. They come loaded with Duncans as well.

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

G&L makes really nice stuff, as does Anderson. Carvin also makes some stratty guitars that, after a pickup change, are some of the best out there.

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

Thanks for the knod guys

I do make a flat top (strat style) model - however, I can do any wood/pickup config you want (any neck contour) and my neck joint (IMHO) is far superior to a standard 5/8 deep bolt on

you can't go wrong with Suh, Grosh, Lentz, G&L, but feel free to PM

cheers

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

If you don't want a Fender, go with G&L. Still designed by Leo. ;)

I was thinking about a G&L but I've heard some good things and some bad things. I know there Tele's are amazing. Anyone have experience with their strats?

And in this corner, representing the cheap seats . . . :laugh2:

This may not fit your needs, but for the sake of others reading this thread, I gotta say, the Johnson Del Mar (JS-800) or the Johnson Cali (JS-700), (the one I have), are surprisingly nice Strats for the money - with two caveats: replace the tuners, and block the tremolo. You still have less than about $150 in it and you don't really need to replace the pups.

BTW - I took mine apart and looked, its a real solid-body wood - not plywood or laminate, which is more than I can say for my beloved Peavey's. ;)

With new Ernie Ball strings, mine has that classic Strat jangly chime and plays great.

FYI . . . :)

G&L's Rule!!!!! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

The only strat style guitars I'll play are G&L S-500's. If you can find one with a mahogany body they sound even better. G&L's quality is top notch.

Don't forget Erinie Ball/Music Man...their Silhouette Specials and their new SUB line out-Fender the current Fenders.

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

Ok... the real companies.

Tom Anderson, Sadowsky, Don Grosh, Mike Lull, Pensa Suhr, Scott Lentz (probably the best IMHO), those vintage Schecter ones (Gearjoneser was raving about his tele... and rightfully so). Those are really the best of the best... nothing else really comes close.

For the money, Melancon and G&L are very good options. You could look for an ESP or a Hamer strat, but Melancon and G&L are far better and odds are you'll find them for not much more.

Man, those are some great guitar links you guys are mentioning.

This one particularly caught my eye:

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

I hear you BennyD! I had an American Deluxe and I was NOT impressed whatsoever. I ended up getting a MIM strat and tricking it out with Duncans and couldn't be happier with it!

I don't know much about their Strat copies, but Agile makes some that look pretty nice. If they are anything like the Les Paul copies (I own one), you can't go wrong for the price.

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

I bought an American Deluxe from Guitar Center... olympic white with a maple fretboard, my dream guitar... and ended up returning it. Its build quality was downright horrible.

Surprised no one's mentioned Warmoth - I'm thinking of getting a Tele built by them when I get the money!

Hey man for the money you ain't going to beat that Mex Strat. But if you don't want a Fender get a G&L Legacy, now thats one sweet guitar! Its going to be a little bit lighter weight than the strat but its got a sweet neck too and its really smooth. Also comes with pretty good stock pickups. Great crafted guitar IMO at least that 1993 or 94 model my friend has is. You can probably get one for $700-900 new or get a used one from Ebay for $350-$600. Godd luck man Or you can get 2 MIMs for $500-$600 on Ebay. :burnout: One with a maple fretboard and one with a rosewood fretboard. Sorry about all the talk about the Mex, but its a great deal man. :13:

I heard G&L has gone over to a lot of computers and C&C'ing stuff just like Fender though :-(...can anyone confirm that?

As of a year ago (last I checked), G&L only used CNCs on their low-end (import?) stuff.

BTW, who cares if a guitar is carved with a CNC, a template-guided router, or a pocket knife as long as its up to stuff as far as tone, playability, and looks?

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

Carvin makes the Bolt that is built like a tank. They sound great

Re: Who makes a good strat? Refuse to buy Fender

I say take some time, go to all the stores you can get to, and play every strat at every price level. If you absolutely must buy MIA, if you play 20 or more you'll find one that speaks to you. forget about brand and place of manufacture, and listen to each strat plugged and unplugged. You may walk away with a G&l, a Suhr, a fender MIJ, who knows? -strats are like that. Trust your ears and hands.

Now, if you have cash to burn, go for a fender custom shop model. Otherwise, Tom Anderson:
